GALION — It took a year, but Galion got back at its long-time county rival, Bucyrus.

The Tigers rode a four-run third inning and a five-run fifth to defeat the Redmen, 11-1, in five innings in a non-league game at Heise Park.

“It was kind of the revenge tour from last year (a 9-6 loss at Bucyrus) when they got us,” Galion coach Phil Jackson said. “It was nice to come out here and play good.”

The Tigers played well on both offense and defense. Starting pitcher Clay Karnes retired the first nine Redmen batters. Over those three innings, Galion (5-1) put up six runs on six hits. They were aided by five bases on ball by Bucyrus (1-5) pitching, a theme for the game lamented by Redmen coach Sean Maudsley.

“We didn’t help any by giving them (10) walks,” Maudsley said. “We didn’t have 11 baserunners the whole game, but we gave them (10) free passes. That was the difference in the game.”

Three singles and a walk in the first inning gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Four bases on balls, a hit and a Bucyrus error produced four more runs for Galion to get the lead to 6-0 and the Tigers never looked back.

“We have some things to work on,” Jackson said. “We didn’t execute 100 percent like we have in the past. We like to run, use that small ball and our kids did enough obviously to get a run-rule and that’s great.”

Brody Symsick relieved Karnes and pitched the final two innings. Bucyrus touched him for five hits and a run, but the Redmen could not get the key hit to have a big inning.

“Offensively, we’d get the first two runners on and couldn’t get the runners around,” Maudsley said. “We’re not putting the ball in play with runners on base right now.”

Singles by Ben Seibert and Nic Middleton in the fourth broke up the no-hitter but did not result in a score for the Redmen. They averted the shutout in the fifth, however.

Dylan Goff and Lincoln Mollenkopf started the frame with singles. After two were retired, Nic Middleton singled to load the bases and Goff scored on a wild pitch.

Galion ended the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Spencer Keller and Cameron Payne each had two runs-batted-in singles and Jackson Staton had an infield single that plated the final run.

Sam Albert had a double, Payne had two singles and Troy Manring, Keller, Ryan Utz, Staton and Jacob Lear singled for the Tigers.

Middleton had two singles while Seibert, Goff and Mollenkopf singled for Bucyrus. Noah Parker started on the mound, giving up six runs — four earned — on five hits. He walked five and struck out one. Tod Spurlock finished, surrendering three hits and five walks which led to five runs, only one of which was earned. He struck out one.

Jackson was able to get some bench players valuable playing time.

“That was really the goal on some of these non-league games,” Jackson said. “We’ve been rained out in virtually all of our non-league games except the first one.”

“A couple of kids are buying in to what we’re telling them,” Maudsley said. “Ben (Seibert) and Nic (Middleton) had good at-bats today. They’re starting to come around.”

The coach sees overall improvement as well.

“We’ve got to show better than we did today,” Maudsley said. “They’re getting there. I want them to be more competitors. Right now, we’re not competing.”
