Galion’s Tigers have opened the 2017 high school baseball season with a pair of wins, including Wednesday’s 5-4 thriller over Buckeye Valley in nine innings.
Galion is now 2-0 on the season, 1-0 in league play.
The Tigers opened up the MOAC tilt with three runs in the first and made that stand up until the sixth when the Barons rallied for two runs to knot the score at 4-4. It stayed that way until the Tigers pushed across a single tally in the top of the ninth frame.
Garrett Kuns got the win in relief for Galion with three scoreless innings of work. Kuns struck out two and walked three. Mac Spears started the game on the hill for Galion and went six innings. He struck out five and walked four.
The Tigers’ offense banged out 13 hits including a double by Spears. Ryan Talbott, Dyer, Kuns, Spears and Will Donahue all had two hits apiece. Spears drove in three runs with his bat.
Galion is next scheduled to be in action at River Valley on Friday.
In other scores from area diamonds on Wednesday, in baseball Buckeye Central edged Mohawk 6-4, Colonel Crawford topped Carey 12-7, Seneca East blanked Ridgedale 4-0, Upper Sandusky defeated New Riegel 5-1, and Wynford was leading Bucyrus 6-3 when the game was suspended.
Softball scores include Mohawk routing Buckeye Central 16-2, Seneca East downing Ridgedale 6-2 and Bucyrus over Wynford 6-5. The Carey at Colonel Crawford game was postponed.
