SYCAMORE — Blake Foos came through as a senior quarterback should in a crucial game. But he got plenty of assistance from his blocking corps.
The 6-2, 200-pound senior ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns as Seneca East posted its fifth win of the season, 30-7, over rival Mohawk in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference game Friday night.
Tigers head coach Ed Phillips was quick to applaud his signal caller, but also heaped praise upon his line.
“I thought our offensive line, our tight ends and our backs, they just kicked their butts up front tonight. Groups like that don’t get their names in the paper much,” he said.
Phillips then listed the unsung heroes.
“Lucas Hicks and Justin Reiter at tight, Nick Daniel, Dom Hemmer, Brett Martin, Mason Holmer and Landyn Hicks those guys up front just came out and did the job. Those are the guys that put those 30 points on the board.”
Seneca East (5-3, 4-1) came into the game ranked 11th in Division VI, Region 22, in this week’s OHSAA computer rankings.
Jackson Gayheart, a 180-pound freshman running back, put the Tigers on the board in the first quarter. Foos added short runs in the second and third quarters.
Caden Fritz and Gayheart had interceptions for Seneca East.
Mohawk (1-7, 1-4) battled hard and kept it to 14-7 at halftime.
Warriors head coach Eric Daniel said his team didn’t show up prepared to play.
“The Jekyll and Hyde has got to stop. You can’t show up against Carey and we know you’re ready to play, you’re hittin’ and thumpin’ and competing. But these guys (Seneca East) are a good football team. You can’t tell me they’re any different than Carey,” he said.
“They were ready to play, and we were not. They were more physical than we were. We wore down. Foos is rock solid, runs hard and throws the ball. They were consistently moving the line of scrimmage.”
Mohawk scored its lone touchdown when senior Nick Golling caught a 19-yard pass from Ben Bogner in the second quarter to make it a 14-7 contest. Bogner rushed for 71 yards on 15 carries.
Golling was crowned King and Mia Miller Queen during pre-game homecoming ceremonies.
“Blake is really dynamic and a tough kid. He came out and had something to prove tonight. I think the whole team did,” Phillips said.
“I think that was our best game of the year, offensively and defensively. They’ve been in a lot of close games with really good teams. They had a nice little spurt there to come back.”
One difference may have been Seneca East’s depth, according to Phillips.
“We threw fresh bodies at them. Our coaches did that tonight, putting fresh bodies out there and I think we wore them down. We told them all week we wanted to wear them down and those 3- and 4-yard runs in the first half would be five- and 10-yard runs in the second half.”
Taylor Young’s 22-yard run closed out the scoring for Seneca East.
Next up for the Tigers is a trip to play an improved Wynford squad. The Royals lost to Colonel Crawford, 37-34.
“Wynford’s playing really well this year and I knew they were a pretty good team last year and lost some close ones. It should be a good game. They’re a physical team.”
Reiter had four solo tackles and Gayheart three for the Tigers. Reiter had three tackles for loss.
Daniel’s team has struggled this year.
“We have to bring that same intensity week in and week out,” he said. “If you don’t, you don’t have success. We’ll keep coaching them up and expect them to show up and have good attitudes.”
