Two of the area’s most successful spring sports teams kept their seasons alive on Wednesday with district semifinal wins. Colonel Crawford will play Milan Edison at 5 p.m. Friday at Lexington with a district softball title on the line and Wynford will go for a district baseball crown at 1 p.m. Saturday at Shelby against New London.
Colonel Crawford’s Sydney Studer pitched a four-hit shutout and the Lady Eagles scored four times in the sixth inning to defeat Margaretta, 4-0, Wednesday in the Division III district semifinals played at Lexington High School.
Studer struck out 12 and didn’t walk a batter as the Lady Eagles won for the 23rd time this season and advanced to Friday night’s district championship game.
The Lady Bears’ Lydia Harris held Colonel Crawford to two hits through the first five innings. In the sixth, the first five Lady Eagles reached base with Karissa Rowlinson, and Alexus Burkhart singling. Jada Klingenberger’s base hit drove in the first run of the game. Burkhart scored on a wild pitch before Lexi Hoepf walked with Sydney Studer was safe on a fielder’s choice driving in a run.
The fourth run of the inning scored on a sacrifice fly by Abbie Bradshaw.
Four-hitters were the Wednesday special in baseball as well in Shelby where the Royals used an outstanding pitching performance from Kyle DeJean to defeat Norwalk St. Paul, 4-1. With the Division IV district semifinal win the Royals are now 19-5.
Tied 1-1 heading into the seventh inning, Caleb Stone’s pop-up into no-man’s land scored Jalon Brown from second with two outs. Wyatt Smith gave DeJean and the Royals some insurance with a two-run triple to seal the win.
