CRESTLINE — Despite having a 25-point lead at the half, Jonny King was not happy with his team. The Crestline mentor watched as the Bulldogs got two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties late in the half.
“You go in with a 38-13 lead, from a score standpoint you feel good,” King said. “But to be honest I was not happy with the style of play. We were making a lot of mental errors and we were just doing some things that were not good from a character standpoint that I was not happy with. They got challenged a little bit and we wanted to see what kind of players we were going to be and what kind of men we were going to be.
“How we’re going to represent ourselves and our school,” King added. “I liked the way we came out and finished the second half in a much cleaner fashion. And I thought we did that.”
In that first half, quarterback Kaden Ronk rushed for a touchdown and had a pick-six, and he hit wide receiver Calvin Reed five times for 160 yards and three scores as the Bulldogs battered Cory-Rawson, 51-20, Friday night at Hutson Stadium.
The win improved Crestline to 3-4 on the season. Cory Rawson fell to 0-7 but this was one of the largest losses the Hornets suffered.
Reed said the Bulldogs were not going to throw the ball as much as they did in the first half. After Ronk scored the first touchdown in the first quarter, he hit Reed from 46 yards, 55 yards and 25 yards. Halfback Enyce Sewell added a 20-yard run.
“I’m pretty sure we had a plan to do a lot of running,” Reed said. “When we got the first touchdown, I guess we were going back to it.
“(Ronk) is a good quarterback with a pretty good arm,” Reed added. “And I was open, and he was able to find me.”
King said that his star wide receiver is an important cog in the offense.
“(Calvin) is a special player,” King said. “Anytime the ball is in his hands, whether it’s a deep throw or a short one, he kinda works in space and he’s a special athlete out there.”
On the final play of the first half, Ronk added an 80-yard interception return as the Bulldogs held a 38-13 lead at the break.
For the game, the Bulldogs wore throwback uniforms from a heyday period of the 1990s.
For 48 minutes, the team played like it.
The uniforms were paid for by former Bulldogs quarterback Joe Zara.
“That’s been in the works for quite a while,” King said of the uniforms. “We initially were going to break them out for our first home game because we had some alumni things going on. But honestly, they didn’t get here in time.
“Since I got here, I met with Coach (John) DiPietro, just kind of learning about and embracing the history of Crestline football,” King added. “We’re honoring the past as we look toward the future. We’re trying to build what Crestline football is trying to become.”
In the second half, the teams played under a running clock, but the Bulldogs managed to get a four-yard Sewell run and a seven-yard Ronk run to end it.
King said that the Bulldogs came in wanting to run the football.
“We knew we had some matchups that we liked, and we have some special players on the edge there,” King said. “But we came in anticipating to kind of pound the ball. But they came out and shut down initially what we were trying to do. We just have some athletes that were just trying to make some plays. We were able to stretch them out a little and then we were able to come back to the run game.”
Ronk hit eight of 12 passes for 215 yards and three scores. Sewell rushed for 85 yards in 12 totes and two scores, while Ronk added 62 yards in 11 carries and two scores from scrimmage.
The Bulldogs travel to Riverdale (3-4) next Friday night. The Falcons lost to Liberty-Benton, 49-0, Friday night.
