NORTH ROBINSON — Physically, the Lakota Raiders are one of the smaller teams Colonel Crawford will face all season.
Of the 35 players on the Raiders’ roster, just eight players are six feet tall or taller. And just five Lakota players weighed more than 200 pounds.
So as one might expect, the bigger and more physical Eagles used that physicality to control both lines of scrimmage.
Crawford (2-0) gained 428 yards and scored 42 first-half points in beating Lakota, 42-3, Friday night.
Lakota coach Michael Lento felt that a good Crawford team simply played more physical football.
“That’s a very good football team,” Lento said of the Eagles. “Anytime you can come in and, what did they graduate? 15 players? And now they reload with 16. They have done a great job over the last decade making runs and, again, they will probably be one of the top teams in our region.
“We want to get to that caliber of football,” Lento said. “We’ve done some good things at Lakota over the last few years, and we want to continue to get to that level.”
Colonel Crawford coach Jake Bruner said that his team is a physical bunch.
“I can’t say enough about our seniors,” Bruner said. “They like to hit. They want to hit people. They’re fun kids to coach because they want to be in there the whole game. We’ll get our money’s worth next week when we play East Knox.”
Crawford’s ability to control the line of scrimmage allowed the Eagles to run and throw the football with equal success.
“I like our team because we’re balanced,” Bruner said. “Different guys catch it, and different guys can run it. Obviously, our quarterback can run, and we have many backs and many receivers.”
Crawford scored twice in the first quarter when Kamryn Lohr hit Trevor Vogt from 47 yards out and halfback Matt Clinard scored from five yards away.
Lakota’s Brandon Leal booted a 36-yard field goal and Crawford held a 14-3 lead after one.
The Eagles put the game away in the second quarter. Fullback Micah Thomas scored on a 25-yard run, halfback Tanner Dyer added an 11-yard run and Lohr found tight end Jacob Maddy from 33 yards away.
Lohr connected with Vogt once more from 48 yards away and the Eagles held a 42-3 lead at the break.
“We’re really balanced right now,” Bruner said. “Matt Clinard has a club on his hand right now. When he gets that club off, which will probably be next week, he’s gonna be the guy. But Tanner Dyer gives us a scatback’s quickness and Micah Thomas is a really big hard-running fullback and they all can play.”
Bruner still sees room for improvement, however.
“We did some really good things tonight and there were times we looked a little shaky,” Bruner said. “A lot of it is we’re playing a lot of younger kids. We’re playing a lot of kids and there’s a lot of veteran guys but there’s a lot of young guys sprinkled in there.
I like our team, but we have to take more steps,” he added. “But these kids are great kids to coach, they are working really hard.”
Lento said that his team was not as consistent as he would like.
“We saw some good things,” Lento said. “But, when things kind of go bad, they keep tacking on. So, we’ll get better at that, we’ll step up and we’ll coach harder. We ask our kids to get better and we’ll get better as coaches.
“There are some bright spots. We were able to string some plays but then we fizzled out. Maybe it was a missed block here or a dropped pass there. Those are things you can’t do when you play a team like Colonel Crawford. The coaching staff has done a great job over here. This is a great program, and the community comes out and supports it.”
