NORTH ROBINSON — For Buckeye Central, it was a case of the wrong team at the wrong time.

The Bucks came to Colonel Crawford Friday night to face an Eagles team that was coming off a brutal 35-7 loss to Mohawk the week before.

Also, it was Homecoming at Crawford, and King Lucas Foy and Queen Aubrey Zizzo watched as Crawford came out quickly.

Then, Crawford honored former CC head coach Mike Cauley with a stone under the scoreboard at Gary Stadium at halftime.

All those factors worked against the Bucks and the team simply never had a chance.

Crawford scored nine points in the first two plays of the game and 30 in the first quarter, en route to an impressive 62-0 win.

With the win, the Eagles improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference. Buckeye dropped to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

BC coach Jordan Phillips anticipated that the Eagles would come out just as they did.

“We knew (Crawford) would be hungry and we knew we had to match their intensity,” Phillips said. “We didn’t do that. There were a couple of good things we’ll see on film, but there is going to be a lot of areas of growth.

“(CC) is a really good football team,” Phillips added. “We just have to play better football.”

Colonel Crawford coach Jake Bruner said that his team came out ready to play after a difficult loss.

“We had a tough night last week,” Bruner said. “All of us were down a little bit. It was hard to go to practice on Monday and it was a long week to get to Friday.

“Then, obviously, we had Homecoming and our Coach Cauley tribute today,” he added.

Bruner said that his team still has some room for improvement.

“We’re still a young team here,” Bruner added. “All of us were kinda down, I think, and the kids and we’re just learning to grow, and we just have to continue to get better.

“Our kids came out and I thought they were focused and played really hard, and that’s important. We have great kids and a great community, so we’re fortunate.”

Crawford scored on the first play of the game as tailback Connor McMichael flashed over left tackle and burst for a 63-yard scoring run. Crawford led, 7-0.

On the second play of the game, with the Bucks having possession, Crawford dropped BC quarterback Jack Phillips in the end zone for a 16-yard loss and a safety.

With just 29 seconds gone in the game, Crawford held a 9-0 lead.

“We’ve had some slow starts, and I really felt like we had to push it a little bit and I thought our kids did and they were focused,” Bruner said. “We were in and out of formations and doing different things and that was good. We’re a little banged up and have some injuries from last week. We want to keep getting healthy because we have a tough stretch coming up.”

Things never got better for the Bucks.

Quarterback Brayden Holt dashed 70 yards for a score for the Eagles then Dom Dean scored on a four-yard run. McMichael added a 56-yard run on the final play of the first quarter and Crawford held a 30-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Holt scored on a 22-yard run, before quarterback Peyton Baker hit wideout Parker Weithman from 26 yards out. Crawford held a 44-0 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, freshman Avery Powers scored on a six-yard run.

After BC failed to cover the ensuing kickoff and Crawford recovered the ball at the Buckeye 2, Bruner decided to try a field goal on the next play, and Joseph Zizzo booted a 20-yard field goal. The Eagles held a 54-0 lead after three.

Crawford got another safety in the fourth quarter, blocking a BC punt out of the end zone. Powers finished the scoring with a one-yard run.

“I look at Buckeye Central and, I talked to their quarterback and told him that he is really good, and they have some great athletes, but they just don’t have enough kids yet,” Bruner said.

“Their coaches are doing a great job, and that’s a positive for them. It says a lot about them and what they’re doing,” he added.
