BUCYRUS — In an offensive game, there are very few teams that can hit the ball better than Colonel Crawford.

The Lady Eagles banged out 13 hits, including a triple and 3 doubles. Crawford scored three times in the top of the seventh inning and downed Bucyrus, 12-10, Friday night.

It was the second time that the Lady Eagles and the Lady Red combined for 20 or more runs. The win was payback from Tuesday when the Lady Red came away with a 12-8 win.

But high-scoring games are Crawford’s forte.

“We’re sitting back patiently waiting for good pitches to hit,” Colonel Crawford coach Ethan Weithman said. “We can hit with anybody. We’ve outhit everyone we’ve played this year.”

Trailing 10-9 entering the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Eagles broke through.

Paige Allen opened the frame with a double to right center before Bella Stratton singled home the tying run.

After Allison Weithman walked, Madison Cobb singled home a run. Rylie Hoepf singled and a fielder’s choice scored the final run.

“The pitching was what we got,” Bucyrus coach Jerry “Pudge” Hargis said. “We got out there on the mound and the kids tried and that’s all you can ask for.”

Crawford scored twice in the first off Bucyrus starter Kendra Blizzard. Two Bucyrus errors opened the door.

Bucyrus cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning on a Blizzard single.

Crawford increased the lead to 4-1 in the top of the third on singles by Weithman and Cobb and a run-scoring double from Hannah Allen.

Bucyrus took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the third on three walks and singles by Natalie Hankins and Brook Dennison.

Crawford got four more in the top of the fourth with six straight hits. Singles from Cobb, Hoepf, and Emma Strausbaugh sandwiched a Hannah Allen double. Madison Gray and Paige Allen capped the rally with singles. Crawford led, 8-5.

Undeterred, the Lady Red regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with four runs. Two walks and doubles from Stratton and Addy Ricker, along with a Marissa Middleton single.

Each team scored a run in the sixth, setting up the seventh inning.

“We played as a team,” Weithman said. “We made some mistakes, but we played as a team, and they all fought, and they all came back; when we’re at our best we’re all playing together.”

Hargis felt that his team was a little inconsistent in the game.

“There were times we played good and times we didn’t, but they are kids, and they enjoyed the game,” Hargis said. “They made mistakes, and they did some good things. That’s just the nature of the game.”
