NEW WASHINGTON — The Big Two remain the same.
Colonel Crawford girls and Galion boys won the team championships in the Crawford County Track and Field Meet on a windy Friday night.
“It’s been a while for us. I think the last time was when Todd Roston was over in Galion with us before he went over to Crawford to help them. It’s nice to bring it back home,” Galion head coach Ryan Scribner said.
The Tiger boys edged the Eagles, 170-141, thanks to sophomore Jacob Chambers winning four events.
“Jacob is a Swiss Army Knife. You can put him anywhere and he’s going to score points. Going into this meet we knew what Miranda (Stone) could do. She did it last year going one and one in the shot and discus,” he said.
Chambers took the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes and the long jump.
“It was rough. I didn’t know if I had that in the 400. It was really close,” he said.
Chambers nosed out Eli Sprague of Bucyrus by .03 seconds to win the event. Teammate Gabe Ivy finished second in both the 100 and 200.
“With relays and stuff, points are divided up. If you go individuals, you get more out of it and we were just trying to get team points,” Chambers said.
Competing in four events “was definitely tiring. I was really happy with the long jump (22-feet, 5 inches). The other times I wasn’t too crazy about. I was hoping to get the record for the 100, but I fell short of that.”
Stone, a senior bound for Duke University, dominated the throwing events, winning the shot put by a margin of nearly nine feet and the discus by 34 feet.
“I was disappointed in how I threw today, but I got the job done and scored 20 points for our team. Our other thrower, Jillian, (Capretta) she did more than what we expected out of her. She scored three points and was seeded ninth in both events. That was pretty big,” she said.
Stone lamented a missed opportunity of her own in the discus.
“My third throw it was probably maybe a foot out of bounds. It probably would have set the meet record and been at least 10 feet farther than my best throw. Those kind of things happen,” Stone said.
“I’ve been better in discus. I’ve been more consistent and over 130 (feet) other than the Elks, which was just bad overall. Being over 130 is really big, given how I did at regionals last year in discus,” she said.
Scribner said his team’s headliners got plenty of help.
“But in a meet like this it’s a team effort. You’re going to get your 20 points, your 30 points from kids like Jacob and Miranda. But you need points from those other kids. Everybody stepped up today. We had some girls compete and score some points today that weren’t supposed to,” Scribner said.
Linkon Tyrrell won four events, tops in the 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and the discus. He teamed with Gabe Ivy, Logan Shifley, and Samuel Evans to win the 4X100 meter relay.
The Lady Eagles continued their dominance piling up 214 points to easily outdistance Galion at 149. In the process the 4X400 relay team broke 46-year-old record.
“It was a great performance by the girls. A very-well balanced team. A lot like last year — strong relays, strong sprints, strong hurdles,” head coach Preston Foy said.
“It’s a very well-rounded team and a great 4X400 by the girls breaking the meet record. It’s a tough meet record to break because of the competition. To do it by themselves is pretty impressive. Losing two girls from the state meet last year it’s kind of being ahead of the game from where we were last year and girls are excited about it,” he said.
The quartet of Mira Holt, Cecelia Chase, Gabby Roston and Olivia Hardy won in 4:14.21. The previous best of 4:15.40 was set by Buckeye Central in 1978.
Roston won the pole vault (11-feet, 5-inches) breaking her record from last year, in addition to being a part of the relay team and taking second to Mira Holt in the 300-meter hurdles.
“Gabby is a well-rounded track athlete and understands track very, very well. She understands why she needs to be in certain events to help the team. She’s a team player,” Foy said.
Senior Hailey Slagle won four events for the Lady Eagles, capturing the girls 100 and 200 meters and teaming with Sydney Rayborn, Lynae McKibben and Roston to win the 4X100 meter relay.
Slagle also was in the foursome with Rayborn, McKibben and Niyah Shipman to take the 4X200 meter relay.
Shipman won the high jump, nudging Galion’s Ashley Dyer by two inches and took second to Holt in the long jump.
Bucyrus Karter Boggs won the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. Colonel Crawford’s Shawn Auck was second in both events.
“I got about 200 meters in (the 3200) and my legs were just tight, and I was like, this’ll be fun. Overall, today was very good. Just wanted to keep the titles and help our team out as much as I could,” Boggs said.
He also was part of the winning 4X400 and 4X800 relay teams, with Carter Bierce, Deven Deskins and Sprague.
“We didn’t know if anyone in the end could break 60 (seconds) and we have three people who are very consistent at running 55,” Boggs said. “When I’m fresh I can run 55, but not when I ran the 3200.”
The Redmen boys finished third as a team.
“In the mile and two-mile I wanted to potentially break 4:30 and 10 for the first time this year. But as soon as I started the race the wind picked up really bad, and I knew that was out the window.
“In the middle of the season you always question yourself because you’re not running the times that you think you are. Then it all comes like that, when it’s the big times,” Boggs said.
Medals were sponsored and presented by employees of the North Central Ohio Media Group for first place and second place finishers in each event.
