NORTH ROBINSON — Bucyrus and Colonel Crawford are currently polar opposites when comparing the current state of the football programs.

That was demonstrated in their matchup Friday night at H.J. Gary Field.

The Eagles put on an offensive display against the young, overmatched Redmen, defeating Bucyrus, 56-6, in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference game.

The large Homecoming crowd was treated to a smorgasbord of scoring. Colonel Crawford (4-0, 1-0 N10) took control early, to the delight of Queen Izzy Roston and King Tyler Smith.

“Anytime you get a homecoming win, you feel good about it,” Colonel Crawford coach Jake Bruer said. “We know that the future here in the next couple of weeks is going to be awful tough. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

But work put in to this point was evident in the Eagles dominance, especially on offense. They needed only four plays on their first possession to cash in on a 36-yard drive, topped by Micah Thomas’ 12-yard run.

Following an interception, quarterback Trevor Vogt ran in from 26 yards to make it 13-0.

First-year Bucyrus coach Jon Butchko is fully aware of the disparity between the teams.

“It’s where they are and where we are, two different ends of the spectrum right now,” Butchko said. “Their offensive line is big, they’re physical, they’re strong, and ours is young, inexperienced and they’re not very strong yet.”

The bright spot defensively for the Redmen was an interception by Kavan Combs who returned it 45 yards for a touchdown — the only score of the night for Bucyrus (0-4, 0-1) that made the score 13-6 with 1:23 left in the first quarter.

But it was all Colonel Crawford from there. Thomas ran in from 20 yards, Parker Weithman caught a 43-yard pass from Vogt, Connor McMichael had scoring runs of six and three yards, and Tyler Smith had a two-yard run to build a 47-6 lead at intermission.

“Obviously, we’ve got some weapons,” Bruner said. “We could have run the ball at different times, but we really wanted to work on some things.”

As it was, the Eagles rushed for 264 yards and seven touchdowns. The two-pronged attack of Thomas and McMichael combined for 157 yards and four scores. Vogt added  54 yards and one touchdown on the ground and threw for 77 more.

Bucyrus was able to move the ball with its controlled passing game. Brayden Campbell was 26 of 44 for 185 yards. Only once, though, did the Redmen seriously threaten to score.

Campbell hit Kam Lewis with a 14-yard pass from the Colonel Crawford 16 on fourth down, but the Eagles kept Lewis out of the end zone and Bucyrus turned the ball over on downs at the 2, midway through the second quarter, with the score still at 20-6.

“We’re cursed. There must be a force field around that end zone,” Butchko joked. “(Brayden) made a great throw on that fourth down. I thought he ended up in the end zone or (they) certainly climbed his back on the way there. It is what it is.”

Lewis caught eight passes for 78 yards and Trevor Kirgis grabbed six for 43 yards for the Redmen.

“I was super impressed with Bucyrus, especially offensively,” Bruner said. “Our game plan, I told the kids all week, was just stay back, let them throw underneath. And our kids did a great job with that. But Bucyrus did a good job catching the ball.”

Butchko was impressed with Vogt’s leadership at quarterback.

“He’s really athletic. He’s great for what they do,” Butchko said. “He a tremendous athlete, very decorated in all the sports he plays. And he’s got some really good guys around him.”

“Our kids got frustrated sometimes, but I told them, ‘Listen, let them throw underneath guys. They’ve got to drive 18-20 plays to do that.’ And that’s kind of our mantra. I think (the Redmen) were patient. They took what we gave them and that was good for them.”

“We have a guy making his second start at quarterback,” Butchko said. “He played well his first one. The opponent got a little better (this week). The margins got a little smaller. I told him several times in the first half, ‘You’re going to learn more tonight than you ever learned last week.’

“I just hope that nobody in our locker room quits,” Butchko added. “I’m certainly not going to quit. We’re going to continue to devise ways to compete and continue to implore us to build positive habits.”
