NORTH ROBINSON (Crawford County Now) — Anyone who thought Colonel Crawford was a two-man scoring show might want to check the box score.
The Eagles (12-1, 8-0) put four starters in double figures and handled a good Upper Sandusky team 53-31 in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference game at Mac Morrison Gymnasium Saturday night.
“It started on the defensive end. That team can score the ball. They got five guys that can score, and I thought defensively we were really locked in with our preparation,” said Crawford head coach David Sheldon.
John DeGray led the way with 16 points, six rebounds and an assist. Logan Goddard added 12 on four 3s.
Payne DeGray also netted a dozen and Brayden Holt chipped in 10, along with seven rebounds, a pair of steals and two assists.
“Offensively, we were just so unselfish. They came out and tried to double Holt. Then they would double Payne in the post, our two leading scorers. So, we find other guys, and we put four guys in double figures,” he said.
“The selflessness of this basketball team tonight was huge. We only had three turnovers with them trying to double Holt and Payne.”
The other starter, senior Kaden Bruner, added three defensive rebounds and an assist.
Upper Sandusky (10-4, 5-3) fell behind early, trailing 10-6 in a slow first quarter and 24-13 at halftime. Holt’s pair of mid-range jumpers pushed the lead to 24-10 before the Rams’ Luke Schoenberger hit a 3 with 45 seconds left in the first half.
The Rams were led by Josh Heilman and Brock Montgomery with seven points apiece. Montgomery was held to half of his team leading 13.5 points per game.
“I didn’t think we played that bad. I mean defensively, good teams are going to score,” Upper Sandusky head coach Jeff Winslow said. “We let Goddard get loose a little bit. Offensively we were patient and made them work. But we have got to make those inside shots.”
Upper Sandusky shot just 12-of-40 from the floor and had 18 rebounds to the Eagles’ 23.
“I thought we had zero effort on the offensive glass. Against good teams you can’t get one shot and that’s it,’ Winslow added. “You have got to get some second chances. They played well and rebounded.”
Twelve of John DeGray’s 16 markers came in the second half.
“All season we have just been passing the ball around trying to get each other looks,” said the 6-foot-3 sophomore. “When somebody starts doubling Brayden or Payne, we all step up and make our shots.”
He came into the game ranked third in field goal percentage at 68.4% and helped that number going 8-of-9 against the Rams.
“Coaches have been telling me all season just to attack the basket and I work my way there. I’m still working on it. Coaches push me in practice, and it makes me want to go harder every second.”
Having an older brother who leads the league in scoring and is second in rebounding also helps.
“I would argue that he pushes me just as much as Coach Sheldon. He wants me to be the best I can be,” DeGray said.
Winslow acknowledged that the younger DeGray is also a weapon.
“That was a worry because that kid is getting better and better. You watch him on film and they’re trying to get him involved in the offense more. He’s going to be a really good player and he’s solid now,” he said.
The Eagles won the first meeting, 44-42, on Dec. 6.
“It’s a complete effort. This was a big game and a big win for our team,” Sheldon said.
“Logan hit some big 3s and he’s wide open because of our guys finding where he is. I thought several times we’d make a pass out of a double and they would rotate, and we’d make one more for a better shot and that’s unselfishness.”
Colonel Crawford visits Buckeye Central and Upper Sandusky hosts Wynford in N10 games on Friday night.
Tyler Lash scored 11 and Peyton Baker added 10 as the Eagles won the junior varsity game, 40-28.
