HOLMES TOWNSHIP — Wynford’s football season came to an end as Northern 10 Conference foe Carey kept the Royals out of the end zone and came away with a 7-2 victory in the opening round of the Division VI, Region 22 playoffs.

The Blue Devils scored the only touchdown on the night less than three minutes into the game. Griffin Summit ran 54 yards to a score at the 9:45 mark of the first quarter.

Wynford (8-3) would never cross the goal line, though they had several opportunities. The Royals turned the ball over on downs inside the Carey 20 twice and threw three interceptions.

Carey (8-3) gave up the only two points Wynford scored when a center snap sailed over quarterback Brayden Wentling’s head and he batted the ball out of the end zone for a safety with just 2:38 left in the game.

Offense was at a premium for both teams. The Royals finished the night with just 64 yards from scrimmage. They completed two of 10 passes for 12 yards and rushed for only 52 yards. Quarterback Joel Griffin had 51 of those on 13 carries.

Wentling completed four of six passes for the Blue Devils. Summit rushed for 73 yards on 13 carries. Carey totaled 124 yards of offense.

Nine seniors completed their football careers at Wynford: Wyatt Smith, Jordan Imbody, Kevan Hughett, Zack Houck, Robbie Miller, Austin Zeigler, Dakota Brady, Caleb Stone, and Cole Heinlen.

Carey will play Hillsdale — a 28-7 winner over Seneca East — next Friday in the second round of the playoffs at a sight to be determined.
