BUCYRUS — For the first time this year, Bucyrus has won two consecutive games. According to Redmen coach Sean Maudsley, it’s a sign that things are coming together.
Three Bucyrus pitchers combined on a one-hitter and the offense produced 10 runs as the Redmen cruised to a 10-0, non-league win over Willard at Veterans’ Memorial Field.
“Back-to-back wins, we’re starting to put the ball in play,” Maudsley said. “We had five strikeouts (on offense) yesterday (against Mohawk) and I think three today (actually two). That’s exactly what we’re trying to teach them to do. They’re being coachable right now, which is a good thing.”
Bucyrus (5-9) used a pair of five-run innings — the third and the fifth — to shorten the game to five innings. Flashes southpaw Jerret Sowers set down the first six Redmen before his troubles began.
In the third, the Redmen bats came alive and the Willard (1-13) defense faltered. Tod Spurlock and Dylan Goff started the inning by reaching on errors.
One out later, Trevor Ley, Ben Seibert and Noah Parker singled, and Kael Scott drove in a run with a ground out and Bucyrus had a 5-0 lead.
The beneficiary on the mound was Goff, who took over for starter Seibert on the hill in the third inning. Goff went 2 2/3 innings and picked up his first win of the year. The three-pitcher combination was the plan going into the game.
“(Coach Maudsley) wanted Ben to go 30 (pitches) and then me to go 30,” Goff said. “And then, if we needed Nicky (Middleton), he would come in and go 30.”
“It’s what the doctor ordered, a non-league game in the midst of about three league games,” Maudsley said. “We needed some pitching and we needed to get a bunch of pitchers on the mound. All three pitchers came in and really pitched strikes, exactly what we wanted. One walk today. That was really good for our pitching staff.”
Seibert struck out four and walked one in his two innings while Goff fanned three with no walks. Neither surrendered at hit. Middleton finished up and was touched for Willard’s only hit when Daniel Hall dropped a single into center field.
The Redmen finished things off in the fifth. Wiers hit three batters, Middleton, Scott and Lincoln Mollenkopf, the Willard defense committed two errors and Lucas Kozinski had a two-run single. The result was five more runs and the game-winner scored with two outs.
“Finally, we got everyone to hit the ball,” Goff said. “Everyone had a good plan at the plate.”
Wiers had two strikeouts, surrendering one walk and six hits for the Flashes on the mound. Hall had the lone hit.
Parker had two hits and scored twice to pace the Bucyrus offense. Ley, Seibert, Kozinski and Mollenkopf singled. All nine Redmen batters scored at least once.
“Getting their confidence up is the big thing right now,” Maudsley said of his charges. “Going through a spell where we lost three to four in a row got their confidence down. This was a very big step in getting their confidence up.”
