BUCYRUS — By her own admission, Bucyrus guard Malina Rowland hadn’t been shooting the ball well.
“I’ve been struggling the past few games, but you just have to be confident when going into a game,” Rowland said. “We still have a couple more games. So, I’m ready.”
Rowland entered Tuesday night’s game with Mohawk, looking to get back on track.
She certainly did that.
Rowland scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the first half to keep the Lady Red in the game before her teammates joined in during the second half.
Bucyrus got its first lead since the first quarter, late in the third period and made it stand, beating the Lady Warriors, 46-44. The win was the first for the Lady Red, who improved to 1-13 overall, 1-9 in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference. Mohawk fell to 3-11 overall, 2-8 in the conference.
It was Rowland’s performance that was the difference. The guard knocked down four threes, all in the first half, then scored six more points in the second half as Bucyrus charged back to get the lead.
The Lady Red led late in the first period, 13-12, but the Lady Warriors got two free throws from Katie Woodland and a follow from Chloe Miller gave Mohawk a 16-13 lead after one.
Mohawk led by four, 19-15, on two Allison Russell free throws but Rowland drilled two threes in the final two minutes of the half and the teams were tied, 21-21, at the break.
Mohawk led by four twice in the third period and held a 32-28 lead on a Woodland layup with 2:40 left.
But Bucyrus rallied. Rowland knocked down a jumper, Aubrie Kimmel dropped two free throws, and Rowland added a basket with 31 second left as the Lady Red held a 34-33 lead into the final frame.
The Lady Red actually held a 44-39 lead on a basket from Savannah Clark before the Lady Warriors trimmed the lead.
Sam Schock scored a pair of baskets and Anna Russell hit a free throw with 1:54 left to tie the game at 44-44.
Bucyrus got a free throw from Clark and one from Marissa Middleton to take the two-point lead with 15.4 seconds left in the game. Mohawk had a chance to tie the game but missed two opportunities.
Woodland and Miller each scored 16 points for Mohawk.
“(The win) was much needed,” Bucyrus coach Brian Seybert said. “The girls have been working really hard lately. And I thought Saturday was our best four quarters defensively. Offensively, it wasn’t there. But we held two of the top scorers from Seneca East below their averages, which was a goal.”
Middleton seconded Rowland’s 22 with 11 points for the Lady Red. Freshman Savannah Clark added eight.
“Tonight, I thought, was our fullest four-quarter game that we have played, offensively and defensively,” he added. “The girls did everything we asked them to do; play hard, play physical. Don’t worry about any of the situations that happen in a game; just play through it. Shoot confident shots and get to the rim when we can. I thought we were pretty good at that tonight.”
