BUCYRUS — Tuesday, Bucyrus right-hander Caleigh Rister had a bit of a sore arm, the day before the Lady Redmen were scheduled to face the best hitting team in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference, the Mohawk Lady Warriors.

“(Rister) did very well throwing the ball, moving it around, and she pitched a great game,” Bucyrus catcher Lauren Kohler said. “Yesterday we practiced, and her arm was hurting a little bit and we came today, and I asked her how her arm was, and she said it felt good.”

Rister was brilliant against Mohawk.

She tossed a complete-game one-hitter, striking out eight, as the Lady Redmen stayed in first place in the Northern 10, blanking Mohawk, 7-0.

With the win, Bucyrus improved to 7-0 in the conference, 10-4 overall. Mohawk fell to 3-4 in the league, 7-4 overall.

The only hit Rister permitted was a single off the left-field fence by Tess Weinandy, and she was thrown out at second on a great throw from left-fielder Taisha Spears.

Only five Mohawk runners reached base in the game.

“I felt that I threw the ball pretty well and Lauren, behind the plate, stopped the ones that were a little off,” Rister said. “Defensively, we had a couple in the outfield that was a little iffy, but, overall, we were pretty solid.

“I was happy with our girls.”

Rister’s facing a great hitting team didn’t faze her at all.

“I’m just going out here like every other game,” Rister said. “Whoever is in the box, that’s my opponent.

“If you don’t go out there with confidence, how are the girls behind you going to play with confidence?”

“I asked (Rister) if she had any nerves and she said, ‘Of course I’m not nervous,’” Kohler said with a giggle.

Mohawk coach Mindy Walton was impressed with Rister as well.

“She’s one of the best pitchers in our league and she did a great job,” Walton said. “We’re getting better but we faced a very good pitcher.”

The Lady Redmen took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Kohler single, a stolen base and a wild pitch.

Bucyrus increased the lead to 4-0 in the third on a Rister RBI single, an RBI groundout from Jade Torres and an RBI fielder’s choice from Faith Schifer.

Bucyrus got three more in the fifth on a Torres single, an infield single from Schifer, a fielder’s choice and a Kohler double to center.

Mohawk starter Makenna Hurley also went the distance, striking out four, walking five.

“I thought she pitched well,” Walton said of Hurley. “In fact, she pitched her best game of the season. We just faced a good team.”
