NEW WASHINGTON — The outcome was never in doubt as Buckeye Central used its balance, size, and depth to dismantle Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic here Friday night 67-0.
The visiting Crimson Streaks punted on their first 6 possessions of the game and were held to -2 yards in total offense, while allowing the Bucks 482 yards and 28 first downs.
“It was preparation. Our kids did a great job knowing the scouting report, front and back. I want to give a shout-out to our scout team all week,” Bucks head coach Chad Jensen said.
“They did such a great job preparing the starters. There’s a lot of younger kids who don’t get to play a lot and they’re the ones that got us prepared.”
Prepared they were as four different players — Dom Dean, Heath Jensen, Jack Phillips, and Derex Dean — found the end zone in a 27-point first quarter.
Jensen led the receiving corps with 94 yards on 5 receptions. Dom Dean added 74 rushing yards.
Backup running backs Isaac Hiler (14-103) and freshman Elijah Cline (12-68) added to a robust ground attack that accounted for 266 yards.
“Our kids studied film and we were prepared. There were some things we thought we could do if we executed. We were able to do that.”
Jensen praised his defensive unit and staff.
“Our defensive coaches Kevin Dean and Mike Garrett do a great job with our defense. Again, they do a great job of preparation and coaching our kids. They know where to line up and what their roles are. We’ve been preaching all 11 doing their job,” he said.
The only blemish on Buckeye’s report card were the 6 penalties for 40 yards.
“It was great minutes for our younger kids. Elijah Cline ran the football well. He’s going to be a nice back for us. He’s only a freshman. Collin Perry had a nice interception and had a big stick,” Jensen said.
Phillips went under center in the second half as Buckeye Central moved players around and got younger ones onto the field.
“Jack played quarterback and took some snaps. He doesn’t usually get those with senior Derex Dean. It was nice for our starters not to have to play at all in the second half. I told them that’s just a testament to their hard work.”
The Bucks (2-0) host Ada in their third and final non-league contest next Friday night. The Crimson Streaks (0-2) visit South Central before both teams begin their respective league play.
“I told them we’ll have our work cut out for us next week. Ada is a good football team, and they will present some challenges. We told our kids to enjoy tonight, enjoy the weekend and it’s back to work on Monday,” Jensen said.
Having two sets of brothers on the team and his son playing for him is special for Jensen.
“I get a little teary-eyed because I’ve coached those seniors since they were in third grade and others since kindergarten and first grade. And I’ve coached some of them in three sports — football, baseball, and basketball.
“This senior class means a lot to me and to mix in with the sophomores. I’ve coached Dom Dean, and the Phillips twins were on my Little League team. For them to really jell and come together, it’s a really cohesive team. It’s one of the most cohesive teams we’ve had in a while,” he said.
The sophomore class is a solid one with the Phillipses, Dom Dean, Gabe Bellamy, Cade Daniel, and Josh Dorsey, who recovered a fumble in the first half.
Senior Jacob Hiler also fell on a loose SJCC ball.
“Having some older kids to look up to is big. We had one of our freshmen, during our break here, said thank you seniors for being leaders and doing the right thing,” Jensen said.
“And they haven’t always been leaders. They’ve been followers a lot and suddenly this year they’ve come out of their shell and they’re leading, not only by talking, but by example in practice and I think that’s a big thing.”
