NORTH ROBINSON (Crawford County Now) — It was an afternoon best suited to stay indoors on Wednesday, but it was also an afternoon for outstanding pitching performances. Both pitchers had to battle the cold and strong winds the entire game.
Buckeye Central starter Cayden Jarvis tossed a complete-game two-hitter, striking out eight, while his counterpart, Colonel Crawford starter Van Wintersteller, fired a complete-game one-hitter, fanning seven.
And none of the three hits, all singles, contributed to the scoring in any way.
The Bucks used four walks in the third inning to score three times and added a run in the seven to claim a 4-0 win over the Eagles.
With the win, Buckeye Central improved to 7-2 overall, 3-1 in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference, while Crawford dropped to 2-6 overall, 0-4 in the N10.
Buckeye Central coach Chad Jensen felt that his team’s ability to run the bases was the difference in the game.
“We had one hit? I didn’t even know how many we had,” Jensen said. “We were able to get some baserunners and were able to take advantage of a few things.
“But the key was we were able to get a few baserunners, and, when you do that, things can happen,” Jensen added.
BC’s only hit came in the top of the second from junior Jeremiah Fishpaw. But the runs the Bucks got came one inning later.
Tye Craft, Jarvis, and Lance Cole each walked to load the bases. Fishpaw then walked, forcing in a run. From there, Jarvis scored on a wild pitch and Cole on a passed ball, giving BC a 3-0 lead.
Colonel Crawford coach Jordan Oliver said that one bad inning has cost his team all season. The Eagles have dropped six straight games.
“We just have to work on staying mentally tough, and, when things go bad, we just have to have guys step up and make a play,” Oliver said. “When it rains it pours sometimes but it’s never as bad as it seems, and maybe never as good as it seems. We just have to find a way to win tomorrow and get ourselves back on track.”
The Bucks scored their final run in the top of the seventh. Jeremiah Roberson reached on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a pair of ground outs.
Jarvis was the winning pitcher. The senior walked five and permitted singles by Grady Riggle in the fifth and Deagan Moore in the sixth. But each time, Jarvis was able to make big pitches to get out of the inning.
“(Jarvis) pitched really well,” Jensen said. “He was awesome, he was able to hit spots, and the conditions weren’t great, but he battled all night long.”
Wintersteller may have been a little better. Other than the four walks in the third, he walked just two the rest of the game. And BC’s run in the seventh was unearned.
“(Wintersteller) pitched awesome; he’s a junior, he works really hard,” Oliver said. “Baseball is his favorite sport and I love Van. I will always back him up. His teammates love him. No knock on him. It was tough weather conditions to pitch in and he did an outstanding job of that.”
