COLUMBUS (Crawford County Now) — Buckeye Central’s Corbin Bloomfield and Carter Giesige of Crestline strode across the infield turf to the podium together from the high jump pit Friday evening. Both were smiling and for good reason.
Bloomfield, in his second straight appearance at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, finished fourth in the long jump, going 21-feet, 4.25 inches. Giesege was right behind him in fifth at 21-4.
“I’m happy. It was an off pit. Nobody was jumping their PRs,” Bloomfield said.
The senior finished second last season but has been bothered by a hamstring injury this spring. He entered the meet seeded third based on regional results.
“I didn’t have the best season but in the end I kicked it in,” Bloomfield said.
“I don’t know if it was the pit or the wind or what. I know I didn’t have the jump I wanted. Talking to other kids they didn’t have the jump they wanted, either.”
Bloomfield’s first jump of the season came at the Crawford County Meet where he was runner-up to Giesige with a 21-11. A few weeks later he won the Northern 10 Athletic League title with a jump of 21-10.75.
Cowin Becker of Northmor won with a jump of 22 feet.
“All the kids here are good. The competition is really tight,” Bloomfield said.
As a youngster, he said he didn’t think making it to state was in his future.
“I’m still shocked I got here two years in a row, especially with a hurt hamstring this year. I feel blessed, that’s for sure.”
Giesege came in seeded 11th.
“I just want to thank God for this opportunity for everything he’s done for this whole season,” he said.
“The pit was all right, but it was a little filled up. The board was a little stiff and nobody was jumping good.”
The weather delay that started at 1:13 p.m. and lasted until about 2:45 p.m., wasn’t a factor for him.
“I got here about an hour before, so I really wasn’t affected by the delay,” Giesege said.
The senior had a solid football season, but it was shortened by an injury that limited his basketball court time.
“I came out last year only jumping 20-1 and came into this year thinking mid-21 is gonna be good,” he said. “Then I pop, and I kept popping higher, higher and higher. Hard work paid off.”
Playing sports at a small school (276 students) can be beneficial, Giesege said.
“I loved my time at Crestline. People underestimate it. Everyone there has a good heart. They all work hard. I would go back if I could.”
The top eight in each event earn all-Ohio honors.
TRIFECTA QUALIFIER
Mira Holt of Colonel Crawford had a busy weekend.
She was third in the long jump at 17-1, which was her first attempt of the three allowed on Friday.
“I was excited with my first jump and that made me more comfortable for the second one,” she said. “I wish I would have had second, but I’m happy with third.”
Isabella Zahn of Coldwater jumped an eye-popping 18 feet, 8.5 inches to win the event.
“That’s crazy watching her. She’s in our region,” Holt said.
Holt placed sixth in the 400 meters Saturday morning, running a PR and an Ohio Top 50 mark of 57.47.
“I’m used to the relays being down here and multiple events, so I think preparing earlier in the season and doing a lot of harder events at meets, conditioning, that type of thing,” she said.
“And I kind of liked running first because it got me up and got me moving. The 100 and 400, so it’s not too bad. The fast heat (in the 100) helped me out in the end.”
Holt ran a 12.69 in the 100 meters, to get ninth place, capping off a stellar track and field career.
Holt and Gabby Roston are four-year qualifiers for the Lady Eagles.

“I’m definitely not disappointed. I’m happy that I came this far. Good work ethic and the coaches saw the potential in me and I’m grateful.”

“I knew it was going to be tough. I put myself in the spot I wanted to be in on the first two laps — top eight — then my legs just didn’t respond when I needed them to,” the junior said.
“Some of that could be just getting used to the summer training because I’m still training as if it’s spring. And I always struggle with the heat when it comes to getting back into it.”
Boggs’ goal is to get under 4:20 over the summer.
