HOLMES TOWNSHIP — It wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing of games. The two teams combined for 18 hits but committed a combined seven errors.
But Wynford prevailed over Bucyrus 11-9 in rainy, windy conditions in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference game on Tuesday.
Lady Royals head coach Chelsea Rice said she was proud of her team’s effort in picking up its third league victory.
“I think the bats are finally starting to show up a little bit. Like we told them, when it comes to pitching, Adison (Sebring) is doing everything she can in the circle. Let’s back her up with the bats. We need all the runs we can get to have a cushion,” she said.
Sebring, a sophomore outfielder, was thrust into the pitching rotation when an injury ended ace hurler Rylee Robinson’s season. She picked up the win, scattering 10 hits, striking out three and walking seven Lady Red hitters.
Bucyrus (2-6, 1-6 N10) scored two runs in each of the first two innings before Wynford made it 8-4 after two.
Marissa Middleton led off with a single to left and Haylee Stratton ripped a double after a Brook Dennison single.
The Lady Royals (8-7, 3-5 N10) answered back immediately.
Senior Mackenzie Jones hit a double to left field. An error and a couple of walks opened the door for the Lady Royals. Briley Hildreth drove in a run in each inning on a sacrifice fly and a fielder’s choice.
“I’ll tip my hat to Bucyrus,” Rice said. “The girls were aggressive, whether it be Brook Dennison in center ready to come up throwing. Bell (Bruss) in the circle was pretty good and their third baseman (Kendra Blizzard) was throwing them out.”
Bruss relieved junior starter Tavia Parker in the second inning when Wynford took a 5-4 lead on Jones’ second two-bagger.
“They’re like us. Nobody believes we can do it and we’re all going to be up towards the top,” Rice said.
Lady Red head coach Jerry “Pudge” Hargis said his team is still learning the game.
“I like our girls. I like the approach that we have. But we’ve got to learn what softball is about. You’ve got to be a little more selective on the balls and the strikes. You can’t take chances on bases, especially when you’re down,” he said.
“We got off to a lead there and we gave it up. Our pitching was not as good as it should be. But overall, we came back and did a pretty good job.
“The pitching was not great in these conditions. We’ve had water all day. The field is not terrible, but it’s not in good shape.”
The two rivals held each other scoreless in the third and fourth innings.
Bucyrus added a run in the fifth, but Wynford countered with three of its own.
Middleton’s double to left, a Lady Royals’ fielding error (one of five for the game) and a Dennison RBI groundout cut the score to 8-5.
A two-out base running error cost Bucyrus a chance for any more runs in the inning and opened the door for three Wynford runs.
Frombaugh doubled in a run after an infield error put Makaila Morrison on third base. Hildreth drilled her second double, this one to left center field.
But Bucyrus didn’t give up, scoring two each in the sixth and seventh innings.
Bruss singled in Natalie Hankins, who had reached on a walk and advanced on an error. Middleton and Stratton drove in runs in the seventh before Sebring got the last two Lady Red batters to pop up to shortstop and ground out second to first.
Rice said the coaches and all 15 girls have a part on the team.
“Without Rylee Robinson in the circle, I think the N10 sees it. But Adison Sebring knows her part. All I ask is that she throw strikes and let the defense play and that’s what she’s doing, especially the last couple of games,” Rice said.
“Everybody realizes that Rylee is an ace in the circle. Adison is going to show them that she can at least compete and help Wynford win.”
Maddy Lutz and Lily Laipply had singles for the Lady Royals.
Hargis is hoping for better weather.
“I guarantee you when the weather gets warmer, this team will get a lot better. We have some small girls, and our pitching has to be coordinated with that. We’ve been playing in cold weather all the time except for one game in the 60s,” he said.
“Our team is going to make mistakes. But it’s how you bounce back from those mistakes and do some good things. And we’re getting there, slowly but surely.”
