NEW WASHINGTON (Crawford County Now) — The more tenacious team prevailed.

Wynford came out pressing and took advantage of 22 Buckeye Central turnovers for a 47-30 Northern 10 Athletic Conference win Friday night.

“We played a lot off the bench and were able to create some momentum off some pretty important steals early by Ally Liming and Caroline (Sheldon),” Lady Royals head coach Amy Taylor-Sheldon said.

“We were able to push the ball, and it was good to have post players who can play a lot of different positions.”

Wynford (5-2, 2-1) was fueled by Caroline Sheldon’s 10 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Three players — Maggie Ridge, Liming and Jenna Filliater — added 8 points apiece.

Wynford went up 16-10, led by two Paige Sheldon steals and baskets, a steal and a 3 by Ridge and a theft and a two-pointer from Liming.

“In the first half we only gave up one offensive rebound and I think we had 9,” Taylor-Sheldon said. “I was pleased with us shooting so many 3s (Wynford was 7-of-32), with how well our rebounding was.”

The Lady Royals led 26-17 at halftime. Joslynn Hensley hit a 3 for BC to counter one from Maradath Engler before Caroline Sheldon drove in to end the second quarter.

Buckeye Central (3-3, 2-1) struggled with the pressure and also shot just 10-of-31 from the field.

“We knew it was going to be tough knowing you’re playing a team that wants to pressure and with the guard play that Wynford has. We knew what they wanted to do and we knew what we had to do,” Buckettes head coach Tyler Shade said.

“There were some mental mistakes and there were some physical bounces that didn’t go our way.”

Jenna Cianflone scored 11 points while Macy Deppen added 6 and Harper Kantzer, starting for the injured Aleyse Siefert, had 5 and one blocked shot.

Cianflone added 4 rebounds, along with Megan Siefert.

“Credit to them. They turned us over and sped us up in a way we didn’t want to play. That was the difference in the game,” Shade said.

“Turnovers have been the story for us. We like what we do in the half-court defense, but we have to be able to limit teams to one possession.

“When you give a team that has a Maradath Engler and a Caroline Sheldon multiple looks at it, they’re going to make you pay eventually.”

Having a young team is a challenge facing Buckeye Central.

“Some of it comes down to experience. We have a lot of underclassmen in very big roles,” Shade added.

“The moment maybe was a little big tonight. I also felt like we missed having Aleyse. She’s been that calming influence. When we want to speed the game up, she’s the one that usually takes control of the reins and we missed that.”

She injured her knee against Van Buren Tuesday night.

“A girl came down and cracked her knee on the ground. It doesn’t sound like it’s structural, thankfully.”

Dictating the game’s tempo is something that Wynford is capable of doing.

“Whether it’s half-court or full-court we’re going to try to do a good job creating tempo, forcing you to slow down or speed up,” Taylor-Sheldon said.

“That was great balance tonight. You’re looking at the scoreboard and you’re seeing kids, whether it’s a 3 or lay-ups, or on a pick-and-roll. Being able to score in a variety of ways is good for you in the long run.”

Buckeye visits New London on Tuesday and Wynford hosts Crestview on Thursday in non-league games.

Buckeye Central won the junior varsity contest, 34-31, in overtime.
