BUCYRUS — Poor weather is expected at the Elks’ 156 Invitational Track Meet and Saturday’s 25th edition was no exception.

But even with gusting winds and dropping temperatures, the meet was completed as planned.

Galion girls finished first with 105 points and Crestview took top honors on the boys’ side with 106 team points.

“We train in this stuff all the time, the weather’s been terrible,” Galion coach Todd Roston said. “We tell our kids that we’ll have meets like this and today was one of those days where it was cold and windy.”

The Lady Tigers took first place in five events: Freshman Samantha Comer in the 100-meter hurdles (16.69) and the 300-meter hurdles (52.20); Marisa Gwinner in the high jump (5-02:00) and the long jump (15-05.75); and the 4X100 meter relay (53.59).

“Samantha had a good day today,” Roston said. “She had three first places and she’s a competitor. She’s one of those girls that when the gun goes off, she’s going to run.”

Colonel Crawford finished second to Crestview on the boys’ side. The Eagles had four firsts: Chad Johnson in the 1600-meter run (4:25.10) and 3200-meter run (10:02.37) and the 4X200 meter relay (1:36.55).

“It does help if you have Chad Johnson,” Colonel Crawford coach Preston Foy said. “But I tell the kids that Chad’s only good for 20 points, he runs the mile and two mile. We need 140 points probably to win a conference championship. We need his teammates to step up too.”

Drake Delong had a PR in the discus (127-05) to finish second in the discus and Harley Shaum got third in the high jump with a leap of 6-0.00.

“Hopefully, we can improve,” Foy said. “We’re going to have to if we’re going to be competitive at the districts and at the conference level.”

For Bucyrus, hosting the meet gives coach Carl Rittenour a chance to evaluate his team’s personnel.

“Overall, the meet was run pretty well,” Rittenour said, considering the weather conditions. “It was the first meet of the season for most of us, so it was nice to see where everybody’s at.”

Despite numbers being down somewhat for his team this year, Rittenour was happy to see some nice personal efforts.

“On the girls’ side, we have some girls step up,” Rittenour said. “Kristen Vaughn won the pole vault (7-06.00) and that was a first for her.

“We’re not going to run with Lexington and Galion,” he added. “We just don’t have the horses. But we had some good personal performances today.”

The only other first-place finishes by local athletes were Alizhah Watson of Wynford who won the 100-meter dash (11.79) and Wynford boys won the 4X100 meter relay (46.19).

One meet record fell when Ryan Johnston of Lexington won the 800-meter run in a time of 1:59.31, breaking the previous record of Ben Fithian, also of Lexington, in 2006.
