Russell E. ”Russ” Vose, 87, Walnut Creek and formerly of Galion, died Monday, April 16, 2018 at Oak Pointe Nursing & Rehab Center, Baltic, Ohio after a long illness.
Russ was born in Methuen, Massachusetts on August 4, 1930 to the late Elliot and Marion (Chase) Vose. He married Dorothy M. (Roth) Vose on November 24, 1950 and she survives him.
At the age of 24 years old, Russ began his career as a banker. He served as the Executive Vice President of First Federal Savings and Loan in Galion for 28 years. In 1995 he retired from the Bank in Galion but served on the Board of Directors until 2005. Russ served as a Trustee at the Galion Community Hospital from 1968 to 1983 and was chairman of the Board of Directors from 1982-1983. For over 20 years, Russ was the Treasurer for the Galion Booster Club. Russ was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church of Galion and sang in the church choir for many years. Russ had a great love of singing. He would sing “Sentimental Journey” for all family weddings. Russ would even be heard singing in the middle of the night at the nursing home. Russ attended Bowling Green State University. Russ was a past president of the YMCA & Community Center. He initiated the Music in the Park community summer music program. Russ also had a radio show on WBCO – “The Friendliest Quarter Hour” where he hosted and narrated the Christmas music and told Christmas stories on Christmas Eve for many years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Rod (Karen) Vose of Galion; daughter, Lynette Mahaffey of Sugarcreek; grandchildren, Adam (Amanda) Vose, Tim (Alicia) Vose, Jacob Mahaffey and fiancé Erin Conn, Erin Mahaffey; great-grandchildren, Austin Mahaffey, Aidan Mahaffey, Nathan Jay Vose, Claire Kuhnle; sister, Barbara Nicholson of Concord, New Hampshire.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Vose; infant daughter (Lynette’s Twin) – Annette Vose; son-in-law, Rev. John Mahaffey.
Friends may call Friday, April 20, 2018 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, 303 Portland Way North, Galion. Funeral services will be held at the Christ United Methodist Church, 130 East Walnut Street, Galion on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 11:00am with Pastor Carl Kandel of the Union Hill Methodist Church, Sugarcreek officiating. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery.
