Paul R. Stineman, 88 of Galion, went home to be with the Lord on September 22, 2024, following his passing from an extended battle with cancer. His wife of 66 years was with him to the end.
Paul was born at home on a farm outside of Broken Sword on July 2, 1936, to the late Carl W. and Estella M. (Candel) Stineman. He was a 1954 graduate of Lykens High School, He received a bachelor’s degree from Ashland College in 1959 and completed his masters degree at Bowling Green State University.
Paul grew up on farms and learned the value of hard work at a young age by milking cows, feeding chickens and other animals, and driving the tractor. His professional career included being a teacher, coach (baseball, basketball), guidance counselor, and vice principal. He worked in several school districts: Vanlue (1959-1960), Iberia/Northmor (1960-1965), Mt. Gilead (1965-1967) and Galion (1967-1988). In addition to his career in education, he also worked many other side jobs including line worker at Timken, brakeman on the Railroad, house painter, sports writer for the local paper and drivers ed teacher,
Paul loved God, his family, sports, and travel in that order. He was a long-time member of the Iberia Presbyterian Church and belonged to many different Bible study groups over the years. He was a man of faith and high ethical and moral standards. He set an example for others to follow.
Paul initially met his wife Jeanette Elaine Baker when she took an x-ray of him required for his job as a brakeman. He met her again in 1957 at a dance in Johnsville. Their connection was instantaneous and their love grew quickly. Paul married the love of his life June 15, 1958, in Johnsville Lutheran Church Paul and Elaine had 4 children: Jacquelyn, Jo Deanne, Jeffrey and Janis. All of which he is very proud of and credits his wife for their success.
While the kids were growing up, they took many family vacations together traveling across the country seeing national parks and other family venues. Later in life, Paul and Elaine spent winters in Florida. and traveled to all 50 states and the world visiting: Australia, Scotland, England, Spain, Russia, China, and many more.
When Paul wasn’t traveling or visiting with family he was playing or watching sports, His love of sports started as a boy. In high school, he excelled in basketball and baseball. He is the 2nd leading scorer in basketball from Lykens (now Wynford) schools and was inducted into their sports hall of fame. He played one year of basketball while in college. After college, he continued to participate in organized sports playing softball, basketball, golf, and bowling. He also enjoyed watching sports on television favoring the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals.
Paul was outgoing, loved to talk, and left an impression on people. There were very few places that he went or traveled to that he did not see someone he knew. He always had time to listen and offer heartfelt advice. He did not have a mean bone in his body and wanted the best for everyone. He will be missed by many.
