Mabel Marie (Ruth) Detterman, 93, of Bucyrus, formerly of Bloomville and Attica, died at Legacy Bucyrus on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at 11:30 p.m., following a year of battling with sundowners and dementia. The family extends special thanks to the staff at Legacy for all the special care given to mother, especially to Brittani, Sara, Tom, Tiffany, Haley, Cassie, Sarah, Jenn, Brenda, Lynn, Chelsie, and all the others we may have forgotten. Mabel was born on November 13, 1930, in Whetstone Township Crawford County, Bucyrus, Ohio, to Oscar and Marguerite (Kelly) Ruth. Mabel was married to Richard Detterman on September 28, 1951, at Grace EUB Church in Bucyrus, and he preceded her in 2012.

Surviving is one son, Chris of Bucyrus, and three daughters, Peggy George of St. Marys, Inez Rakausas of Monteagle, TN., and Marlene (Bernard) Cramer of Marion. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan, and sons-in-law Steve George and Rocky Rakausas, three brothers, Walter, Earl, and Gale Ruth, two sisters, Mary McHenry, and Arlene Lohr. She was “Grandma” to thirteen grandchildren, Rob (Buffy) Detterman, Brian Detterman, Cory (Samantha) Detterman, Eric George, Libby Warunek, Kurt (Maria) Detterman, Luke (Sara) Cramer, Bess (Christopher) Daniel, Jenney George, Gwen (Jason) Burlison, Abraham (Ashley) Cramer, Jolene (Michael) Sibbalds, and Neil (Morgan) Cramer. Mabel also had thirty-two great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, three brothers-in-law, Kevin Rothhaar, Gerald (Donna) Detterman, and Kenneth (Evalena) Detterman.

Mabel retired from Seneca East School In 1996, where she was janitor and ‘the bread & butter’ lunch lady! She had many memories from so many students even into her retirement years. She graduated in 1948 from North Robinson High School. She participated in GAA, band, color guard, and 4-H while in high school. She was a former member of Attica and Bloomville Lioness Clubs, along with being the president. She enjoyed playing BINGO, spending time making apple butter with the members of College Hill UCC and at the Oak Ridge Festival, making her famous apple cake for others. Mabel was a Red Cross Blood donor over the years even after fighting a small battle of colon cancer, donating around thirteen gallons of blood plasma. She was especially happy about having the right kind of plasma that preemie babies could receive.

Mabel was always ready to help out anybody and volunteered at many food pantries over the years. She was a former member of Union Pisgah UM Church, Attica, and of College Hill UCC, Bloomville.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 11, 2023, at the Lindsey-Shook Funeral Home in Bloomville, with Pastor Ron Spyker officiating. Final resting place will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bloomville. Visitation for friends and family will be Monday, December 11, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service at funeral home.
