John L. Goldsmith, 73, of Galion, passed away Friday, June 1, 2018 at his home after complications from a stroke

John was born in Galion on December 29, 1944 to the late Harold and Kathryn (Zeller) Goldsmith.

John was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Galion. In 1963, he graduated from River Valley High School where he was among the first graduating class. John went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He retired in 1999 from Roundy’s in Lima where he worked in the freezer department. He was a member of the AMVETS Post #1979 and the American Legion Scarborough Post 243, Galion. John loved to fish and enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada. He had a passion for helping others. With a big heart, John was ready to help anyone in need in an instant.

He is survived by his sister, Joanne and Harry Ziegler of Galion; Maxine Gregory of Galion, who he considered his sister; his step son, Adam Gillespie; his nephews, Anthony Joseph and Elizabeth Keller of Galion, and John Michael Keller and Beth Levings of Galion; his three great nieces and one great nephew; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by stepsons, Richard and Robert Gillespie.

Friends may call Thursday, June 7, 2018 from 11:00 AM – 1:30 PM at the Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, 303 Portland Way N., Galion.  Funeral services will follow at 1:30 PM on Thursday, June 7 at the funeral home with Father Paul Fahrbach officiating.  Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Galion.
