Joan M. Burt, 82, of rural Galion passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2023 after a courageous five year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born May 17, 1940 in Ravenna, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Herman and Florence Eater.

Joan married David Burt on December 6, 1979 and they enjoyed 43 years together.

After her father’s death in 1943, her family moved to Galion and her mother married Paul Metzger. Joan attended Galion Schools. Following her graduation she worked as a librarian in the Galion school system. Joan later worked for several department stores until when in her fifty’s she decided she wanted to help people. She attended The Ohio State University where she received a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Joan worked in the counties of Morrow, Marion and Richland until her late sixties when she retired. Joan was a member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. She loved the Lord and missed not being able to attend services for the last two years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by children Debbie Gillen Hough, Patricia Gillen Vanderkoi and Charles Gillen; five    grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brother Charles Eater of Athens, Maine; sister Janet Tornelli of Texas and step brother Paul Metzger of Florida.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her step father Paul Metzger and brother Edward Eater.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at Iberia Cemetery with Minister Jack Keglay officiating.

The family wishes to thank Charles and Loretta for their special care of Joan in her last few weeks and a very special thanks to the staff of Gentiva Hospice
