Jean Plack received great satisfaction in helping people and contributing to her community. She took pride in volunteering and serving in area organizations. Jean’s contributions to the Galion community and Crawford County will continue on for many years. Jean E. Plack, 94, of Galion passed into her Lord’s presence Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Magnolia Terrace where she had been a resident for the past couple of years.
She was born October 4, 1923 in Galion and was the daughter of Herman L. and Bertha (Nelson) Plack.
Jean graduated from Galion High School in 1941 and went on to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cleveland for nurses training. She worked for Dr. Adams at the Galion Hospital from many years and then as an occupational nurse at the former Galion Dresser from where she retired.
She was a lifetime and active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Galion where she served on the church council. Jean’s additional memberships include the former Order of Eastern Star Naomi Chapter 47 of Galion where she served as the Worthy Matron several times, Galion Golden Age Center, serving as President, Galion Board of Health and past President of the Galion Business and Professional Women’s Club.
Jean helped start Crawford County Hospice which is now HomeCare Matters Home Health & Hospice. She volunteered in many capacities with hospice and received the HomeCare Matters Senior Award and had been a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Other awards that Jean received included Woman of the Year award thru the Galion Business and Professional Women’s Club in 1960, Outstanding Citizen of the Year – Ohio District 5 from the Area Agency on Aging in 1995 and in 2006 Jean was inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame after her many years of volunteering and service to our community.
Jean is survived by nieces and nephews, Carol Prim of Westerville, Gary (Donna) Ness of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Richard (Pam) Ness of Texas, Mike (Dora) Ness of Texas, Susanne Ness of Lewisville, Texas, Tom (Patricia) Plack of Hilton Head, South Carolina and Kathy (Steve) Horvath of Oldsmar, Florida; sister-in-law Joanna Plack of Oldsmar, Florida and numerous great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother J. Andrew Plack; sisters Alice Plack, Dorothy Plack, Juanita Prim, Catherine Ness and Ruth Plack; two nephews David and Steve Prim and her special grandmother Caroline Plack.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Richardson Davis Chapel of Snyder Funeral Homes, 218 South Market St., Galion, Ohio 44833. A funeral celebrating her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church, 129 West Walnut Street Galion, Ohio with Rev. Richard Genzman officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
