Gayle R. Whitney, 81, of Galion passed away Tuesday morning, January 23, 2018 at Mill Creek Nursing Center in Galion.

He was born May 24, 1936 in Chesterville and was the son of Harold and Iris Marie (Canterbury) Whitney. Gayle is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carol J. (Biglin) Whitney whom he married on December 13, 1968.

Gayle graduated from Chesterville High School in 1954 and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He worked as a mason in the Galion area for many years and later with the City of Galion in the water treatment plant retiring in 2006. Gayle was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Galion Lodge 1191, American Legion Scarbrough Post 243 and AMVETS Polk Township Post 1979 all of Galion. He enjoyed golfing at Valley View in Galion for many years and participated in several different golf leagues.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Julia (Paul) Redlin of Spokane, Washington and Valerie (Craig) Richardson of Bloomville; son Robert (LeighAnn) Whitney of Fort Jennings, Ohio; six grandchildren Evan Redlin, Carter Richardson, Haley Phelps, Chelsea, Owen and Sydney Whitney; two sisters Mary Ann (Vernon) Trimmer of Cardington and Jean (Lloyd) Cook of Galion and a brother Bruce (Pam) Whitney of Newark, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Jerry Whitney.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Richardson Davis Chapel of Snyder Funeral Homes, 218 South Market St., Galion, Ohio 44833 where services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 26 with Deacon Greg Kirk officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Crestline.

Full military honors will be conducted by the United States Air Force and the Galion Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
