Edwin Dean “Ed” McElhatten, 80, of Crestline and former Galion native passed away at home after a brief illness on Friday, April 3, 2020.

He was born May 29, 1939 in Galion. On September 14, 1957 he married Peggy L. (Dairy) McElhatten and they were married 43 years until her passing on February 11, 2001. Ed is survived by his wife of 16 years, Phyllis Gates Woods McElhatten whom he married on June 27, 2003.

He was a 1957 graduate of Galion High School and worked at the JC Penney, Galion Hardware and NAPA Auto Parts in Galion. Ed was a life-time member of First Lutheran Church in Galion and was very active in many ministries at church. He was a devoted husband, loving father and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Ed was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose 303 of Galion and enjoyed camping and was a gun enthusiast.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Jodi (Bill) Ricker, Sr. of Galion and Sheryll (Dave) Knipp of Mt. Gilead; sons Philip (Diane) McEhatten of Marengo and Eric (Susan) McElhatten of Delaware; step-sons Matthew Woods of Mountain City, Tennessee and Joseph Woods of Circleville, Ohio; six grandchildren Bill, Jr., Edwin, Callie, Justin, Zachary, Cody; eight great-grandchildren Tiara, Camdon, Eli, Xantara, Micol, Hannah, Janessa and Murissa; close nephew Donald Yeichner of Bucyrus; numerous nieces and nephews and his puppy, Molly.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by a step-daughter Melissa Woods; four sisters and a brother.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date at First Lutheran Church in Galion.
