Barbara J. Beck, 93, of Galion passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024 in Tucson, Arizona at the home of her daughter, Eileen, where she had wintered the last four years. A celebration of life was held in Tucson in honor of Barb on her birthday..
Born January 15, 1930 in South Alabama, New York, she was the daughter of Lester T. and Nellie (Underhill) Ross. She married fellow classmate Richard W. Beck on June 9, 1948 and they enjoyed 72 years together until his passing on November 30, 2020. Barbara was a member of the Gospel Baptist Church in Galion.
She was a 1947 graduate of Galion High School where she was a marching band member, playing the xylophone and bass drum. During her teen years and early marriage she was quite well known for playing the accordion, performing at many meetings and gatherings in the Galion and Crawford County area. Barbara worked as an executive secretary and sales account representative at the former North Electric in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. She devoted her life to her family and helping her husband operate HY-VU Dairy Farms in Galion until their retirement.
She and Dick spent many summers at their cottage at Heidelberg Beach on Lake Erie. They also wintered in Daytona Beach, Florida many years where they attended First Baptist Church of Daytona.
Very dear to Barb’s heart was the operation of The Beck Mission House in Galion that provided a home for many missionary families from around the world who were on leave or deputation in the States. Barb also became “Mom” to several missionary children who needed to further their education by providing them a home in the States when their parents returned to the field.
She is survived by daughters Patricia (Mark) Britt of Galion and Eileen Mason (George) Koons of Tucson, Arizona; son Steve (Sonya) Beck of Galion; eight grandchildren, Shawn (Jodi) Britt, Kevin (Sophia) Britt, Jamie (Sam) Staton, Jeremy (Tami) Beck, Jason (Christina) Beck, Justin (Stephanie) Beck, Cassandra (Aubrey) Stahle and Amanda Beck; 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death,brother Marvin Ross and sisters, Lorraine (Ross) Teseniar and Dorothy (Ross) Miller and by son-in-law Dan Mason.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at Richardson Davis Chapel of Snyder Funeral Homes, 218 South Market St., Galion, Ohio 44833 where services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday with her nephew, Pastor Jeff Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Galion.
