It is with sadness in our hearts, we announce the passing of Mrs. Anne “Annie” Josephine Adcock Evans on October 25, 2024. Anne was a resident at Magnolia Terrace, Galion, Ohio since February of this year with her primary residence on Chiswick Place in Galion, Ohio.
Anne was born in McMinnville, Tennessee on April 27, 1926. At the age of 2 she had lost her mother and was raised by her Grandmother Adcock on the family farm, land granted to the family for participation in the American Revolutionary War. With her Grandmother’s passing Anne would live with her married sister, Mary Lou (Adcock) Judkins in Oakridge, TN. Anne attended Oakridge High School where she was a star basketball player for her local high school and upon graduation in 1945 would move to Columbus, Ohio. An interesting note…Anne would stop at a friend’s home to gather her basketball uniform and drop it off after practice or games…it was during a time in the “Old South” when women’s sports were frowned upon! However, years later, she was delighted to attend her various granddaughters’ sporting events. A special victory she fondly recalled was attending her granddaughter Kirsten Evans’ Michigan State Spartan soccer team defeat the University of Michigan Wolverines.
Anne attended The Ohio State University where she would meet on a blind date a returning WWII Veteran enrolled in the OSU Civil Engineering program. The two would marry in 1950 and eventually move to Galion, Ohio where her husband Charles “Chuck” O. Evans would join the Galion Iron Works. The couple would go on to have 3 children; John O. Evans of Farmington Hills, MI, Choel Evans of Galion, OH (deceased), Amy Jane “Evans” Buckley of Incline Village, NV (deceased). She is survived by Son-in-Law Robert Buckley of Incline Village, NV and 5 grandchildren, Alissa Ashley “Evans” Censoni married to Bryan Censoni of Portland, OR, Kirsten Evans of Portland, OR, Teagan Evans and Lindsey Anne Evans both residing in West Bloomfield, MI, McKenna Buckely of Incline Village, NV and great granddaughter Siena Censoni of Portland, OR. Anne’s brother Noah Adcock and her Sister Mary Lou Judkins have since passed. Anne is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews including Shelley Essig, Caroline Hall, Bob Judkins, Jan Wainwright, Renee O’Regan, Gordon Adcock, Michael Adcock, Debbie Bittenworth, Diane Summerville, JoAnne Adcock, Mary Beth Smith, Lisa Merry, and Sigrid Merry.
Anne was very active in her community and enriched it in several ways: a long time member of the Community Christian Church, the Galion Country Club, the Bridge Club and the Garden Club forming many lifelong friendships. She greatly enjoyed volunteering as a Cub Scout leader, Troop 76, and elementary home room teacher’s aide… a passion for children continued as a Bible study teacher. Her 30 year board of elections participation was a patriotic responsibility she felt compelled to uphold. Anne was honored to be a Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR) Regent, Olentangy Chapter, representing the organization at events in Washington, DC. She received the Crawford County Republican of the Year award for her tireless dedication to elect Ronald Regan in his 1985 Presidential campaign and would often point out with great pride to visitors in her home how President Regan had personally signed the award plaque. She worked at the State of Ohio Publication Department as an Administrator, and was a housewife and proud mother.
Anne was completely devoted and in love with her husband, “CO.” They could often be found working in the garden or yard together, in the kitchen combining their talents to devise a delicious treat, simply sitting beside each other reading or attending various functions with their many friends. The couple were truly “soul mates” and “Chuck” loved and appreciated his wife so much he saved his money until he could afford to build her the house of her dreams… always a Southern girl Anne secretly dreamt of having a house in the “Old South” style complete with “pillars.” In 1968 “CO” surprised her with plans to build the home she could only imagine! This was a warm home she was proud of throughout her life, and fortunate to graciously entertain family and friends until her 97th year.
Anne was recognized as a humble, elegant lady always willing to engage in a conversation. Her southern hospitality was well loved by all. Any visitor would be warmly greeted at her door with an invite to stay for a chat and cup of coffee. She was a tribute and resource to the Galion Community and her beautiful smile and gentle soul will be truly missed by all who knew her.
The funeral will be held at the Galion Community Christian Church, 6195 OH-19, Galion, OH 44833 on Thursday, November 7, 2024. Viewing hours will begin at 10 AM with the funeral services at 11 AM.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Humane Society of Crawford County, (419) 562-9149.
