Voters in the Wynford school district will have items of interest on the May 2015 ballot after that board of education voted to put on two renewal levies.

Renewals for an existing 6.9-mil operating levy as well as a $350,000 emergency levy were both approved at Thursday’s meeting. Both issues are not new to the school district having been up for vote and renewal since May of 2003.

Superintendent Steve Mohr explains that the levies are important.

“It’s issues that have been in front of our community numerous times and particularly the last two or three times it has been passed by overwhelming support,” Mohr said. “We are not asking for any new money, but it is essential that they pass; it is obviously an important part of our financial picture.”

The board rescinded Carl Copelend’s employment as Pep Band/Royal Brass advisor and hired Matthew Safford in that position.

Susan Moore was hired as elementary special education teacher effective Jan. 5, 2015 through the remainder of the school year, Moore replaces Karla Hobson.

Treasurer Leesa Smith reported that the final paperwork for the audit will come in January and will be included in her report at the February board meeting. Smith also noted that the school currently has a $63,000 surplus compared to last year in the insurance fund.

In Mohr’s report to the board, he noted an interest in Wynford’s inclusion into a wage program that has been spearheaded by Doug Leuthold. The program will start with Bucyrus and add a school from the county each year to tour through the industries to see what types of jobs are available in the county.

The board approved the tentative dates for regular and organizational meetings for 2015. With the exception of February and July, the board will meet at 7:30 p.m. on the third Monday of the month. Both February and July’s meetings will be held at 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of those months.

The next school board meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 12 in the High School Media Center.
