BUCYRUS — Wynford Local Schools has hired a new assistant high school principal/athletic director to a three-year contract starting Aug. 1.

Brent Konkle has spent the last 22 years as an English teacher for grades 7-12 at Mohawk Local Schools. Konkle also coached many different sports at Mohawk including being the head football coach, from 2014-present after being the defensive coordinator from 2007-2011, offensive coordinator from 2005-2006, assistant football coach from 2000-2013 and strength and conditioning coach from 2014-present. As a soon to be former Mohawk staff member and a Mohawk graduate, Konkle is looking forward to the opportunities that will arise at Wynford, as he said Wynford has similar athletics and academics and a family-oriented atmosphere and community-oriented school district.

“I think it is time for me to move out of coaching and I have a lot of experience and I think I can help young coaches and programs as an administrator,” Konkle said. “I am ready to get out of the English field and kind of get in to where I can more of a difference in the classrooms without actually being in the classrooms as much. It is just an exciting time.”

The board of education and staff are excited to begin working with Konkle, as many said they think he shows a lot of potential and will be a great fit into the Wynford schools and community.

Also, at the meeting, Board of Education President Steve Crall was recognized by the Central Region Manager for the Ohio School Board Association for his 10 years of service to Wynford Local Schools.

The board received a letter of support from Alita Phillips for the school’s stance on electronic use throughout the day.

“Thank you for being proactive in restricting access to the internet and use of electronic devices during school hours,” she wrote.

She went on to say she has a daughter who substitute teaches in Columbus area schools and sees the negative impact that allowing kids to be on their phones while in the classroom. She commended the district for not ignoring the problem of electronics in the classroom, and for setting up appropriate punishments for those who are caught using their devices when they are not permitted.
