The Wynford Board of Education will be going back to the voters next spring, after agreeing to place two renewal levies on the ballot.
A renewal operating levy and a renewal emergency levy both will appear on the ballots separately, and after discussion between board members, should appear as three-year levies.
Wynford Superintendent Fred Fox initially recommended five-year levies, but feedback from board members suggested making them for three years.
Board member Tom Kalb said after putting thought into it, he would prefer three years.
“I understand it’ll be nice to have the insurance for five years,” Kalb said. “But voters just passed a big, big levy and I don’t want it to seem like we’re throwing more on them.”
Fox said he did not have a personal preference between three and five years, but said he recommended five because the renewals are never going to be not needed by the district.
“The main thing I want to make sure is clear to the voters is that this is not new money,” Fox said. “These are just renewals and will not increase taxes in any way.”
The board was told the figures presented throughout the campaign for the levy for the school would remain the same if both levies were to pass and would not increase.
Fox said the term “emergency” is misleading and should be called a “fixed-dollar amount” levy.
After Board of Education Vice President Steve Crall said he would prefer three years, board member Fred Hendricks said he would prefer a five-year levy, but would go with the majority decision.
The spring elections are May 8.
Board President Debbi Gifford was absent from the meeting.
