Back by popular demand, last June’s highly celebrated BBQ and live music event will again be on tap at the Woodlawn United Methodist Church Campus in cooperation with 23 other churches and almost 60 area businesses. Project Chairman Bill Denton announced today a second Benefit BBQ and “Concert on the Green” from 5 – 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 6 at the Woodlawn UMC, 1675 Hopley Ave., Bucyrus.
All proceeds from this BBQ and concert fundraiser will benefit the Alpha Recovery 12 Step Program, a non-denominational Christian based program working to successfully reintegrate individuals recovering from drug or alcohol addiction into a new life of honesty and stability through a new faith in Jesus Christ and diverting them from a life of defeat and hopelessness. Last year’s event saw over 750 people enjoying this signature event for the entire community.
Additional information about the 12 Step Program is available at Alpha Recovery’s website www.alpha12step.com or by contacting Alpha representative Margie Maddox at 419-689-1412.
Hailing from New Concord, Ohio, the widely known and acclaimed John Glenn High School Steel Drum Band will be featured at 6 p.m. The distinctive sound of this 20 plus piece steel drum band includes an impressive repertoire spanning the genres of rock and roll, reggae and calypso standards of the Caribbean Islands.
Also appearing is the popular local men’s chorus United In Harmony at 7:30 p.m. United In Harmony will be performing a mix of patriotic numbers, Broad Way show tunes, spiritual, light rock or doo-wop and, in keeping with the “Caribbean Sound of the John Glenn Steel Drums,” its own versions of such popular numbers as “The Sloop John B”.
This year’s BBQ Benefit on the Green will be under a huge “circus like tent” and will also feature the guest appearance of former star football punter and kicker of the 1980 “Kardiac Kids,” Don Cockroft.
Cockroft played as both punter and kicker with the Cleveland Browns for 13 seasons (1968-1980) and has the third most career points for a Browns’ player following kickers Phil Dawson (second) and legendary Lou “The Toe” Groza. Cockroft served as the Browns’ primary punter and placekicker for the first nine seasons of his career. Cockroft led the team in scoring during 12 of those 13 seasons. He also set a franchise record with a 57 yard field goal in 1972 against the Denver Broncos. In addition, he kicked five field goals in one game, also against the Broncos, in 1975. Considered the last double-duty kicker that the NFL would ever see, he amassed 1,080 points and was inducted into the Cleveland Sports Stars Hall of Fame and is a member of the Cleveland Browns Legends.
Author of the book The 1980 Kardiac Kids – Our Untold Stories which has become a Cleveland Browns classic, Cockroft will be on hand to personally autograph any book purchases that attendees may wish to make.
The silent auction will include a Joe Haden autographed helmet, a Brian Hoyer autographed football and an Ohio State University Archie Griffin autographed football.
