In 1958, Clifford Scott looked around and realized how many sheep shearers there were in this neighborhood. Because of this, that community decided they would begin a contest in Crawford County.

“That was 1958 and we’ve been running ever since.”

The tradition continued on Sunday afternoon, when 10 shearers gathered in the park at the Crawford County Fairgrounds to compete. There were multiple rounds of talent and technique, but in the end, the results were as follows:

10th place: Dean Cable, who also had the best time
9th place: Dave Cable
8th place: Larry Green
7th place: Andy Johnson, who also won best pen
6th place: Dave Kennedy
5th place: Dave Owens, who took home the award for best fleece

The finalists were:

4th place: Sam Cunningham
3rd place: Mark Wallan
2nd place: Greg Fogle
1st place: Steven Kennedy

Kennedy, who came with his father from Indianapolis, Indiana, said that they came solely for the sheep shearing competition.

“It ran very smoothly,” Kennedy said, sporting a look of pride and the same shirt his father was wearing, bearing the emblem “Kennedy Sheep Shearing”.

The sheep shearing competition helped to kick off the 2014 Crawford County Fair. For more information, go to www.crawfordcofair.com.
