COLUMBUS—A new and somewhat controversial payment method may become available when you shop at Whole Foods.

Whole Foods markets in the greater Denver area will soon take contactless payments to another level. They’re offering shoppers the option to purchase groceries with just the palm of their hand.

The store is also using this technology at sites in the Seattle area.

Whole Foods will make Amazon one contactless payment option available at 11 Colorado locations. The retailer will also add smart shopping carts (Amazon Cart) to its SouthGlenn store.

Shoppers wishing to pay with their hands must link their palm and payment card at a participating kiosk or a point-of-sale station. Once that stage is completed, customers can check out by holding their hands over a scanner before exiting the store.Crawford

County Now spoke with a representative of the Whole Food Store in Upper Arlington, one of three stores in the Columbus area.

Although the technology is promising, the National chain is watching to see how effective the implementation is for the Western stores.

When asked if they recognized the potential controversy of such payment options, they assured us that this payment method would always be optional.
