Wayside Christian School has long held a place in the community as a staple of both faith and education. This weekend provides a chance to give back to Wayside in a fun way.

Saturday marks the 13th year of the Wayside Benefit Auction and Michelle Wert, coordinator of the event and teacher at Wayside, was busy with her team on Monday afternoon getting ready for the festivities.

wayside christian“The auction raises money for the general operation of the school,” Wert said, “to keep a Christian education option open here in Bucyrus.”

As coordinator, Wert had her team go to area businesses that they frequent and asked for donations to give back.

Of their responses, Wert said, “It’s just fun to see how the community supports us and you have the ones every year who are so gracious. I get to meet a lot of people that we don’t even know, who drop off items because they know we’re here, and so it’s fun to meet them as an outreach to the community.”

A precursor to the auction takes the form of a garage sale, set to take place on Thursday and Friday and, on Saturday, the event will begin with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 7-10 in the morning. The breakfast will feature locally raised sausage provided by Hord’s Livestock.

The doors to the gym open at 8:30 for the silent auction, which will take place from 9 to noon with concessions available. The live auction begins at noon with the bigger items and features a unique feature called the white board where 150 gift certificates from both area businesses and the cheesecake factory will be auctioned off.

“It’s quite heated, and quite fun, “ Wert said, laughing.
