The Galion City Council conducted a rearrangement of leadership Tuesday evening due to Mayor Tom O’Leary’s recent health issues.
On May 3, O’Leary underwent surgery at Riverside Methodist Hospital due to an abdominal aortic aneurysm. As of now, O’Leary is stable and on the road to recovery.
In light of this misfortune, the council followed protocol and appointed Council President Carl Watt as the acting mayor until O’Leary is fit to return. As the mayor cannot also serve as Council President, Council Member Gail Baldinger was appointed as interim Council President.
“Life is so fragile, you never know from day to day and hour to hour what can happen. We all hope Mayor o’Leary will be back here soon and wish him good luck in his recovery,” said Watt.

Also on the night’s agenda were two pieces of legislation, which council passed. The Freese Foundation wrote a check for $200,000 to cover the cost of a prefabricated masonry toilet building at Amann Reservoir and the reconstruction of the four tennis courts at Heise Park. The cost of the toilet building should not exceed $65,000 and the cost of the reconstruction of the tennis courts should not exceed $150,000.
The full council along with all of Galion City wished a speedy and successful recovery for Tom O’Leary.
