It was bad news for Galion City Schools at the polls Tuesday, as the proposed school levy was voted down for a third time by Galion voters.

The levy, which asked for 9.4 mils in order to cover operating and ongoing permanent improvement expenses, failed with 1,198 (64.4%) votes against the levy with 665 (35.6%) votes for the levy.

Newly appointed Galion City School Superintendent Mark Stefanik explained that the levy’s outcome won’t affect this year, however it could have implications on the school system as early as next year.

“We have the budget for the 2013 school year without the funds added in,” Stefanik said. “We have to look to future local and state funds and operate within the budget to continue to offer our plan.”

Registered voter in the Galion City School District in Crawford County voted against the levy 1,144 to 662. While in Richland County the vote was more lopsided with 54 votes against the levy with only 3 votes for the levy.

The Galion Board of Education will meet at 7 a.m. on Wednesday to approve the measure to place the levy on the ballot again in November’s General Election.
