Rain and sun both played a part in the annual Mud Volleyball Tournament in Tiro this weekend.
The Mud Volleyball Tournament has been held annually in Tiro for the past four years as a part of the Tiro-Auburn Firefighters’ Festival.
“It’s a lot of fun, it brings people to our Firefighter Festival, and it helps raise money for the department,” said Volunteer Firefighter Craig Wenninger.
This year there were 24 teams of seven, and the tournament was double elimination. The entry fee was $55, but it was all for a good cause. It was easy to see why all the teams were so excited; the sun was shining Saturday, upbeat music was blaring throughout the games, and people were diving and jumping through the mud to make a play, which actually seemed pretty enjoyable.
Big Red Fire Truck Team Captain Stone Wurm of New Washington spoke on how it feels to play in the tournament.
“This is our team’s second year and we’re doing a lot better than past years. I don’t have a personal connect to the V.F.D., but it is a good cause and it’s honestly just a ton of fun,” said Wurm as he stood by the hose station that is available for players after their games.
The Tiro-Auburn Volunteer Fire Department is composed entirely of volunteer members and averages over 100 fire and medical calls per year, which makes it one of the busier volunteer fire departments in Crawford County. The next festival and tournament isn’t until next year, but you can visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/tavfdoh/ to find out more about offering support.
