BUCYRUS — VFW Post 1078 is hosting its fourth annual “Remembering Our Heroes” event. The event, which includes a free lunch to all veterans who attend, will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, at the post.

VFW Post 1078, located at 330 E. Mansfield St., works tirelessly all through the year to prepare for this event and to raise money for veterans in the community who have needs.

“We want all veterans to attend. We work all year for this event to thank them for their service to our nation,” Lori Starner, President of the Ladies Auxiliary, said.

All veterans will be honored collectively as the Ohio State Alumni Marching Band plays the Military Medley. The event will feature three guest speakers. David Root, the State Commander of the VFW will speak along with Chris Palmer, Sr. Vice President of VFW 1078. The final speaker will be Bucyrian Trent Cornell, the Grand Marshall of this year’s parade.

Cornell graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1967 and joined the Marines where he served as a combat soldier. Cornell deployed just days before the very first Bratwurst Festival. He has long served the Bucyrus community and many residents know him from his many years of service as percussion advisor for the Bucyrus High School Marching Band.

VFW 1078 Post Commander Tommy Starner noted that volunteer help is still needed for the event. Anyone wishing to volunteer to help should be at the post at 9 a.m. on Saturday to set up tables and to clean up after the event.

VFW Post 1078 appreciates all the sponsors who help make this salute to our heroes possible. The post also takes monetary donations that are placed in a fund. Profits from the Bratwurst Festival weekend will all go to that fund.

In the past year, the post has paid for building wheelchair ramps, purchased phone cards for vets, repaired vehicles, provided meals, paid for medications, helped veteran families have Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations and contributed to various other needs of our local vets.

If any veterans are in need, they can simply contact the post and the committee will respond.

“There are no hoops to jump through or mounds of paperwork. We verify the need and meet it,” Starner said.
