The fundraising efforts for the new Crawford County Veterans Hall of Fame memorial have officially begun.

Don Scheerer, secretary of the local Veterans Hall of Fame group, told Bucyrus City Council members during their special council meeting that the group was seeking to raise $100,000 to construct the memorial at the southeast corner of the county courthouse’s lawn.

Local businesses Longstreth Memorials and Oberlander’s Tree and Landscape have been tapped to create the memorial and the site.

“It was always meant that we were going to have an outdoor monument,” Scheerer said. Currently, a star-shaped wooden memorial is located inside Bucyrus City Hall. “We’re getting started on it.”

Scheerer said the monument will include classes that have been inducted into the Crawford County Veterans Hall of Fame and those from Crawford County who had lost their lives while in service for their country. Pavers can also be purchased and inscribed with a veteran’s name.

“This is a good thing,” Scheerer said. “We need good people. We need people from Galion and Crestline, New Washington, wherever to be put in to these classes.”

Applications for the inscribed bricks can be found at www.crawfordcountyveteranshof.org. Scheerer said most veterans clubs in the county also have applications for the bricks as well as nomination forms for the Veterans Hall of Fame.

“It’s a good cause,” Scheerer said. “I think you’ll like what you see in the end.”

City Council passed six pieces of legislation during its special meeting Monday.

Ordinance 15-2015 appropriated $20,000 within the Waterworks Fund for the purchase of a new utility vehicle. The new vehicle replaces a 2003 utility truck that was totaled by a fire in February.

Ordinance 16-2015 transferred $25,000 to pay for hiring outside counsel for the city’s lawsuit with City Law Clerk Vicki Dishon.

Two additional ordinances amended the Bucyrus Codified Ordinances to reflect changes to meter charges and time of compliance for structures that are unsafe.

The two resolutions on the agenda amended the theater lease agreement with Bucyrus Community Theatre, Inc. from a two-year lease to a lease with an end date of 2032 and authorized the Service/Safety Director to sign grant agreements for the Schines Art Park.

There will be a joint committee meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
