A Bucyrus man did not get off lightly when it came time for sentencing Friday afternoon. Christopher Vanscoit, 35, pleaded guilty to three charges in Crawford County Common Pleas Court.

Vanscoit received the maximum penalty of ten years on his felony one charge of engaging in corrupt activity. He was also sentenced to five years in prison for a felony two trafficking in drugs charge and 12 months for a felony five possession of drugs charge. The sentences will be served consecutively for a total of 16 years. Vanscoit could receive early release after eight years.

Between January 1, 2013 and April 5, 2013, Vanscoit had been involved with other criminals in a criminal enterprise, sold heroin, and had been in possession of heroin.

“I’m pleading guilty today because I know what I did was wrong,” Vanscoit said in Common Pleas Court.

Judge Russell Wiseman appreciated Vanscoit’s statement. “This is a big step for you to come clean as it were and admit you were wrong,” said Wiseman. “I appreciate that comment.”

Vanscoit will be credited for the 114 days he has already served in jail and will pay a mandatory drug fine of $1,250. The State chose not to pursue the additional mandatory drug charge of $7,500 stemming from the felony two conviction due to Vanscoit’s indigent status. He will be placed on mandatory post release control for five years on the felony one charge and for three years for the felony two charge.
