ONTARIO, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A 3-year-old child is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries after being shot by a 6-year-old sibling Wednesday night, according to the Ontario Police Department.
Officers were dispatched to a residence on Landings Court on the evening of Jan. 21. Following an investigation, detectives determined the incident occurred after the 6-year-old discovered a firearm inside the home. The weapon was discharged, inadvertently striking the younger child.
The victim was treated by Springfield Township EMS and transported to OhioHealth Mansfield. Police confirmed Thursday the child is expected to be released from the hospital soon.
Investigators have recovered the firearm. The Richland County Prosecutor’s Office is currently reviewing potential criminal charges against the adults responsible for the safety and supervision of the children.
“Richland County Children’s Services has also been engaged and is coordinating with investigators,” the department said in a statement.
