MANSFIELD, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Mansfield Police Department has released the identity of the child who died last week after being left in a hot car.
The 5-year-old boy, Kyrie Brown, who was discovered unresponsive in a vehicle on June 26 at approximately 3:15 p.m.
Officers from the Mansfield Division of Police, along with personnel from the Mansfield Fire Department, responded to a call reporting the child’s condition at 91 Marion Avenue.
Upon their arrival, first responders found Kyrie in the arms of his mother, unresponsive.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts by police and fire personnel, Kyrie was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the child had been left unattended in the vehicle for an extended period.
The Mansfield Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, in partnership with the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office and Richland County Children Services.
“It is with a heavy heart that we report this loss,” stated a police spokesperson. “Any situation involving a child has a profound emotional impact, and this incident is no exception. We commend our officers, detectives, dispatchers, evidence technicians, and EMS staff for their professionalism during this investigation.”
While the official autopsy results are pending, preliminary reports indicate that Kyrie suffered from hyperthermia, a condition where the body temperature rises beyond normal levels. Authorities are gathering all relevant facts before presenting the case to the Prosecutor’s Office to determine if any criminal intent existed.
In light of this tragedy, officials are reminding parents to always check their backseats before exiting their vehicles. On a day with temperatures reaching 85°F, the interior of a car can exceed 119°F within minutes, putting children at risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and potentially fatal outcomes.
