A boil advisory was issued by the city of Bucyrus on Tuesday evening after water pressure decreased at the city’s new water treatment plant.
According to City Zoning Director John Rostash, the water pressure dropped for four minutes at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
“Anytime there is a break in the system, a boil advisory is issued,” Rostash said. “The boil advisory was issued as a precaution and under the advisement of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).”
Rostash said that since the pressure was only low for such as short amount of time, it is unlikely that bacteria entered the water system.
“When there is any type of a break in the system, there is a possibility of backflow from an outside source,” Rostash said.
Rostash said the city’s water system always has a residual amount of chlorine to kill off any type of outside source such as bacteria.
Rostash said people should boil water until it is at a rolling boil for at least three minutes before using.
“The advisory is in effect for 36 hours because that is the length of time it takes to receive the results back from the bacteria test that began on Tuesday when the pressure dropped,” Rostash said.
Rostash expects the results to be released by mid-morning on Thursday.
This is the original boil advisory from the city’s utility department:
The following is from the Bucyrus city website:
A BOIL ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE CITY OF BUCYRUS DUE TO A LOSS OF PRESSURE. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AT 4:45 AND ONLY LASTED FOUR MINUTES. THIS BOIL ADVISORY IS ISSUED OUT OF PRECAUTION AND BY THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE EPA.
During a boil advisory the EPA recommends bringing all water to a rolling boil for at least (3) three minutes, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.
THE ADVISORY WAS ISSUED AT 9:30 PM ON TUESDAY AND WILL BE IN PLACE FOR A MINIMUM OF 36 HOURS.
Thank you,
