CRESTLINE―Several events are coming up this month at the Crawford Park District including:
Ahh, Grasshopper: 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598, Crestline.
Grasshoppers can jump 20 times their body length in a single bound and are a truly unique group of insects. Together with their cousins, the crickets and katydids, they make a grassland come alive. The Crawford Park District’s Joy-Etter Link will have fun activities related to these hoppers before a trip outside to catch them with a net. This event is for kids up to grade five accompanied by an adult.
Water Carnival: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11 at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598, Crestline.
The Crawford Park District invites families to the fun annual event. The Water Carnival will allow people the opportunity to focus on the importance of water in an ecosystem and to have a great time getting wet during water games. There will be fire trucks, a bicycle that goes across the water, a slip and slide, and much more. Come ready to get wet and to have great family fun! Food concessions will be available.
Dragonfly and Damselfly Walk: 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12 Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598, Crestline.
Dragonflies and Damselflies are extraordinary but largely unappreciated insects. Beautiful, predatory and fascinating to watch, Dragons and Damsels offer a highly instructive window into the principals of ecology. Meet Crawford Park District Naturalist, Warren Uxley, at Lowe-Volk Park and learn about the habitats and behaviors of Dragons and Damsels. You will also learn more about how to contribute to the Ohio Dragonfly Survey.
Toddler Trot: 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 14 at Unger Park, 1303 Bucyrus-Nevada Road, Bucyrus.
Getting children outside has many benefits, from an environmental awareness to better health. Join Crawford Park District Naturalist, Josh Dyer, and McKinley for this stroll through Unger’s Prairie to explore the trails and pond. For kids not quite in school and younger. Unger Park is located just west of Bucyrus on Bucyrus-Nevada Road.
Frog Jumping Contest: 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18 in Front of the Crawford County Courthouse, 112 E. Mansfield St., Bucyrus
Bring your best frog to the Bratwurst Festival and see if it is the best jumper. This event is open to youth up to age 16. Participants must provide their own frog and the frog should be returned to its habitat after the event. Frogs should be kept cool and moist prior to the event. All frog species are welcome. Call the Nature Center or visit our website for event rules.
Night Hike-Senses: 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18 at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598, Crestline
Do you have great hearing like a fox? Can you smell as well as a coyote? Are you as talkative as a frog? Can you distinguish items by touch like a raccoon? Find out by joining Crawford Park District Naturalist, Abby Ditomassi, on a night hike to see if your senses are as good as the nocturnal animals of Ohio. No flashlights allowed! We will be using our natural night vision on this hike. All ages are welcome; however, the night hike can be difficult for younger kids who have a fear of the dark.
Archery: 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23 at Unger Park, 1303 Bucyrus-Nevada Road, Bucyrus
Whether for sport, food, or fun, archery is a great outdoor activity that gets us away from the hustle and gadgets of life, allowing us to focus on one thing: hitting the target. Join Crawford Park District Naturalists Josh and Lisa for an evening archery shoot that will include an introduction to archery safety and shooting basics. All equipment will be provided. Unger Park is located just west of Bucyrus on Bucyrus-Nevada Road.
