Press release
“There is a heroin epidemic in Ohio,” said Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine. “Communities have to wake up. If you don’t think you have a problem, you are probably wrong. Unfortunately, there are people out there who don’t believe heroin is really in their communities. They don’t want to believe that this can be them – that this can be their child who is addicted or who is going to die from a heroin overdose. The numbers tell a different story. Despite major efforts to fight the heroin epidemic on the state, local, and national level, the problem is not going away, and people are continuing to die. Heroin injects addiction, deception, and death in the lives of so many young people, and we hope our effort can save lives.”
Nationally, United We C.A.N.org embraces, educates, and empowers families impacted by substance abuse disorders. Although there are many issues surrounding treatment and recovery, at the core of United We C.A.N. advocacy and public policy work are several guiding principles:
• Addiction to alcohol and other drugs is a chronic brain disease and a public health problem impacting all Americans.
• Evidence based treatments are integral to ensuring that people receive proper care appropriate to each person’s needs.
• Promote effective treatment and supervised continuing care programs for certain non-violent offenders with substance abuse disorders.
• Harm reduction intervention that seeks to reduce the harms associated with drug use and ineffective drug policies.
• The stigma of “addiction” is a major barrier to recovery; access to care is improved by ending discrimination against people with this illness.
