NEW WASHINGTON, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—As Buckeye Central opens its doors for the new school year, Superintendent Barbara Green is setting the tone with a clear focus: unite, refresh, refine.
“We would like our students to come in and be connected—making meaningful connections with our staff,” Green shared. “We also want to look at the programs we’re offering and really streamline what our students are learning so they can walk into this world prepared, both academically and socially, to be lifelong learners.”
For Green, the excitement of a new year is about more than just academics—it’s about relationships and traditions. “I’m definitely excited about getting to know everybody and really honoring and valuing the traditions that have been a part of Buckeye Central for a long, long time,” she said. “At the same time, we want to make sure that students are set up for success.”

Honoring Traditions of Excellence
Buckeye Central has a proud history of hands-on, innovative learning. Green pointed to project-based learning and the district’s STEAM labs as examples of traditions that continue to shape students’ education.
“All of our students, K through 12, have the opportunity to work in the STEAM labs in collaboration with their classroom teachers,” she explained. “They problem-solve, use AI to figure out solutions to different questions they have, and really approach learning with that hands-on problem-solving mindset.”
Building Stronger Connections with Families
Parents and community members also play a vital role in student success. Green encourages families to stay actively engaged with their child’s learning by communicating with teachers, paying attention to notes sent home, and registering for ParentSquare, the district’s new communication tool.
“It allows teachers, students, athletes, and families to connect one-on-one with each teacher and make sure questions get answered,” Green said. “It also helps families share concerns so we can address them quickly once students are here in school.”
A Message to Staff and Students
To the Buckeye Central staff, Green offers a heartfelt reminder: “You are valued. Each and every one of you brings something unique to the table. Our staff do a fantastic job of supporting a variety of students by building relationships and finding ways to make each student feel connected.”
For students, her advice is simple but powerful: “Take advantage of the opportunities that are given to you. Try something new, reach out and meet new friends. We’ve had a lot of new students come into the district this year, so build those relationships—with your classmates, your teachers, and the staff—so that we can all be part of Buckeye Central and make it the best place to be.”
Back-to-School Memories and Looking Ahead
When asked about her own favorite back-to-school memory, Green fondly recalled picking out school supplies—especially her Trapper Keeper, a beloved staple of her school days.
As she looks ahead, her enthusiasm is clear. “I’m really excited to be a part of Buckeye Central. Being here last year gave me a little taste of what the students, staff, and community members bring to the district. Now, being able to work across all grade levels from preschool through high school—and seeing our kids flourish with the support of families and the community—is something I’m truly excited to be a part of this year.”
